Default More 2-room flats but fewer 3-, 4- and 5-room flats to be built: Khaw

As the Housing Board tapers off its ramped-up supply of public housing from next year, it will build more 2-room flats and "a steady stream" of studio apartments, but will cut down the supply of 3-room, 4-room and 5-room flats.
Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan made the announcement on the Ministry's blog on Monday, sharing some figures on how Build-To-Order application rates have fallen.
He noted that application rates for singles were high with 58 applications per available flat in July, the first time singles could get BTO flats. This then fell to 27 in the November BTO launch. In contrast, the first-timer application rate fell from 2.4 in January to 1.3 in November, while the second-timer rate fell from 14.9 to 2.7 over the same period. Application rates for studio apartments also stabilised at an average of 2.1 in 2013.
"These data will help shape our housing taper for 2014," said Mr Khaw, adding that the exact details "will be finalised and announced soon".

Default HDB to build more small flats for singles: Khaw

    http://www.todayonline.com/singapore...s-singles-khaw

SINGAPORE — Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan said today (Dec 16) that the Housing and Development Board (HDB) will be building more two-room flats to cater for singles while ensuring a “steady stream” of studio apartments (SAs) for senior citizens.
Meanwhile, the HDB will be cutting down the supply of 3-room, 4-room and 5-room flats.
“We will build more 2-room flats, to enable more singles to realise their dreams of owning their homes,” Mr Khaw announced on his blog in a post titled “Shaping the taper”.
“For families, however, we will start to reduce the supply of 3-room, 4-room and 5-room flats... The exact details will be finalised and announced soon.”
He added that the government “will continue to push out a steady stream of SAs to help our seniors right-size, if they so wish”.

Mr Khaw also noted that application rates for singles were high in July, the first time singles could buy Build-To-Order flats, with 58 applications for each unit, and that such data will help the HDB “shape our housing taper for 2014”.
“In 2013, we launched 25,100 Build-To-Order (BTO) flats, as part of a three-year ramped up construction programme, to tilt the supply-demand balance in favour of buyers,” he said.
“Together with the series of cooling measures, the housing market has now largely stabilised, with cash-over-valuation (COVs) in the resale market reaching new lows. This is good for buyers, both for first-timer and second-timer homebuyers.”

Or alternatively, govt is now encouraging people to remain single or married without child hence provide them studio apt and 2BR? Which is which?
Otherwise, why provide housing to singles? It seems like an encouragement for the above!

I don't think buying new 2-room flat will surely make money in 5 years time. The current selling price of these new 2-room flat from the government is not cheap at all. I would rather buy an old 3-room old flat. Can rent out one room and wait for enbloc.

    cannot liddat say.

being single is not a sin; one shd not be denied of an affordable accommodation simply becos he did not contribute to the national population.

tis is liken to telling a fat person tat he is not allowed to buy fm the staff canteen.

btw, married doesn't necc mean will procreate

Government will selectively en-bloc those old "under utilized" HDB, esp 3 and 4 bedrooms blocks in prime locations, eg Holland village, Tiong Bahru, Bugis, Havelock

that's called SERs, and the decision to undertake the exercise is unclear. trying to gun for it is a matter of luck.

at least for enbloc, the committee can call for an exercise.
