MORE plots will soon be released around the Marina Bay and Marina South areas, as the Government pushes ahead with plans to turn the waterfront district into a lively new downtown area.

In May, a tender will be launched for a 1 hectare site on Shenton Way that can be used for offices, hotels or homes.

The Government will also be requesting concepts from interested parties for the construction of an international cruise terminal this year, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said on Friday.

Similar exercises will be carried out for a proposed hotel site next to the planned 54ha botanical garden in Marina South, as well as a waterfront promontory site.

Mr Mah was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new $82.9 million double-helix-shaped bridge linking the integrated resort site with the future Singapore Flyer ferris wheel.

The pedestrian bridge, which will also have a section for vehicles, is the work of Australian firms Cox Group and Arup, as well as Singapore-based Architects 61.

Further development around the Marina Bay waterfront and ringing the Marina South gardens is expected to start from 2009.

Marina Bay, where high-end residences, the Sands integrated resort and the giant ferris wheel are under construction, has attracted $10 billion worth of investments so far.

The Government, on its part, has invested $2 billion to date on infrastructure there, including tunnels deep underground to carry power lines, water pipes and other services.

Mr Mah told reporters on Friday that the Government will be stepping up the release of plots to deal with the current tight supply of office space.

More plots will be put up for tender at specific dates instead of being put on the reserve list.

Vacated government offices could also be turned into private sector office space, while temporary office space could be created to meet short-term demand.

'Rest assured that there is sufficient space for expansion of the commercial sector and the office sector in the longer run,' he said.

Tender for 1ha Shenton Way site to be launched in May - it can be used for hotels, homes, offices

Mr Mah was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new double-helix-shaped bridge linking the integrated resort site with the future Singapore Flyer ferris wheel.

The pedestrian bridge, together with a section for vehicles, will cost $82.9 million to build and is the work of Australian firms Cox Group and Arup, as well as Singapore-based Architects 61.

Running from the future Marina Bay Sands integrated resort to the upcoming Singapore Flyer across the bay, it will form the backdrop for an annual series of sporting events in the area, including biathlons, vertical challenges (run up staircases) and special runs for women and children.

The bridge is just a small part of the development planned for Marina Bay. Further development around the Marina Bay waterfront and ringing the Marina South gardens is expected to start from 2009.
