    Default Do subsidized HDB rental flats really help the poor?

    Published in Zaobao today. This is nothing to do with condo but thinking of taxpayer money goes to subsidy undeserving ppl like this and many are forced to buy expensive condos ...

    过去18年来,赵先生(66岁)都住在向建屋发展局租赁的组屋里,每隔两年,他都成功的以同样租金更新租约。不过,去年11月租约到期时,他因为家庭月入超出顶限且有能力购买组屋,被通知不能续租。

      为了让赵先生有时间购屋,建屋局将他的租约延长半年,但他在这段“宽限期”内须缴付的月租是过去的五倍。   不愿透露全名的赵先生向本报申诉,过去几个月的经历“痛苦又无奈”。.....

    It is about this Mr Zhao who rented a 4-room HDB at heavily subsidized price (80+% subsidized ?) for 18 years as his reported family income is below 1500 for the 18 years. And then his son came back to Singapore to work, the reported family income shot up to 14,000+ per month. So HDB charged him 5 times (about $1200 per month) for another 6 months rental extension before he bought a resale flat. And he still has the cheek to complain that 过去几个月的经历“痛苦又无奈" (painful and helpless for last few months when charged $1,200 per month).

    of course complain, the hdb rental is so much higher than a hdb mortagage.

    HDB subsidised rental flats should be genuinely provided for those low income earners. If i was HDB, i would have just terminate their lease, and give other lower income earners to rent it.

    What u mean? That guy is enjoying $200 rent for 4-room HDB for 18 years while his son is capable of making $13k per month when back to work in Singapore. The $1,200 is charged for the 6-month rental extension after HDB knows about the $14k combined income. And market rental for 4-room HDB is more than 1,600 per month.

    According to HDB, they have since bought an HDB in open market. The most sickening fact is he should be thankful to all the taxpayers yet he dares to write to complain to the press. Remind me of the curry puff king that made 200k per year but reported to IRAS as 20k.

    shocked. unless the son was abroad studying without salary and just came back to singapore for 1st job. but still $1200 per month is almost half market rate, and 14k income!!! dunno what to say. newspaper does a good thing to publish it

    anyone has the full story? i only see the same summary online.
