Yah... I can understand. Old people dun like to move. They are comfortable where they are and they have their friends and memories of the place they live in. These are probably worth more to them than the $$$ from the sale.Originally Posted by Regulators
Bidadari is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit widyadari meaning "nymph of Indra's heaven" or houri, a similar meaning in Persian mythology. One of Johore Sultan Abubakar's wives had set up her Istana residence on Bidadari Estate. When she left the place, the government bought the 45-acre land and a cemetery was opened in 1904, which became Bidadari Cemetery, Singapore's third cemetery with sections for Muslims, Hindus, Singhalese, and a large section for Christians of different denominations.Originally Posted by jhokc
At the entrance of the Christian - Catholic section, D. M. Craik built a simple well-designed chapel with simple brickwork and exposed roof members, and which became a landmark at the location. Later, it was leased to the Japanese who built moats with typical Japanese wooden bridges and tea houses. The Youngberg Hospital, built by the Seventh Day Adventist Mission was set up there. The cemetery closed for burials in 1972 and only cremations are conducted at Mount Vernon. The 50 ha. of the Bidadari area, is one of 12 subzones in the Toa Payoh area today. By November 2001, the cemetery was cleared to make way for a new MRT Station which is part of the North-East Line. At least 58, 000 graves were located in Bidadari with 45, 000 attributed to burials before 1951.

Keke... I guess many are intrigue and concern about cemetry land because of our asian upbringing and belief. Most of us grow up fearing the unknown and supernatural. But not many has thought of them as people who were once alive. For those who still roam this earth, I tend to think that most are really pitiful and are lost.
5577, can it be that near cemetry gd fengshui?
Lately i also have a lot of friends buying potong pasir, look like this area will be happening soon.
Haha... i really dunno about that one... never really look into feng shui....Originally Posted by wkang1970
Actually, if you think about it, it is inevitable that more and more residential projects has to be built on cemetry land... Singapore is so small and every inch of land is precious. With a second influx of immigrant coming from china, india and other countries since the time of our ancestors, there is no choice but to exhume graves and turn it into a living space for the living instead.
Yup, very soon it will be Bukit Brown Cemetery near Caldecott, which is very prime GCB area and don't think any of the buyers there will be too concern of its past.Originally Posted by 5577

Bukit Brown Cemetery, also known to the local community as Kopi Sua or Coffee Hill, was a public Chinese cemetery that had been established in the early 20th Century. It is located between Lornie Road and Mount Pleasant Road, and off Sime Road and Kheam Hock Road, and is still in existence today, despite being abandoned. The cemetery was named after its first owner, George Henry Brown. Brown had been a ship owner who had arrived in Singapore from Calcutta in the 1840s, and had bought the area and named it Mount Pleasant. The land was then later bought by Ong Kew Ho and the Hokkien Huay Kuan, who gave it to the She Ong Kongsi.Originally Posted by 5577
The 213-acre (0.86 km2) site at Bukit Brown had been acquired and passed into municipal hands by the municipal authorities in 1919 after pressure had been put on it to provide a municipal cemetery for the Chinese communities in Singapore.[11] The cemetery was opened on 1 January 1922 and was managed as a public burial ground by a committee led by committee leaders Tan Kheam Hock and See Tiong Wah–who was at that time comprador of the Hong Kong Bank.
By 1929, Bukit Brown Cemetery accounted for about 40 per cent of all officially registered Chinese burials within municipal limits. The cemetery was eventually closed. In the 1970s, the cemetery faced the threat of being cleared for redevelopment, but it was eventually granted reprieve. Now, the cemetery is home to many bird species and wild life, and has as such become popular again–this time, with nature lovers.[12]
It is the only structure that near to the Bukit Brown MRT Station which is part of the Circle MRT Line and this fact is the reason why the MRT station will remain unoperational.

like that ah... potong pasir will be PAP in no time at all. the govt very cleber one. they will re-draw the boundaries of woodleigh and leicester to be included in potong pasir for the incoming condo richies to fight the HDB-dwelling anti-PAP people. simple logic: condo property buyers DO NOT want a bad economy in any way, so the PAP is the lesser evil.Originally Posted by wkang1970

You think it's possible for them to TOP in beginning 2012?
May be possible for TOP end-2012. Think most buyers are on NPS so it will benefit them if the construction is completed early, and so will the CSC too.Originally Posted by 5577

Yup, as if you look at Centris with 610 units, took less than 3 years for TOP.Originally Posted by 5577
