Marina Bay devt on track, Paya Lebar and Jurong regional centres in 10-20 years

SINGAPORE: The government has identified several areas in Singapore for further urban development.

Aside from the next phase of development at Marina Bay area, there are plans to build up the Jurong Regional Centre and the Paya Lebar Sub-Regional Centre within the next 10 to 20 years.

Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan said this when giving Parliament an update on work on the Marina Bay area.

He was speaking during the debate on the estimates for his ministry.

The next phase of development for the Marina Bay area would focus around three areas, said Mr Mah.

The first is the Central sub-zone adjacent to Shenton Way, which will continue the seamless growth of the existing Central Business District (CBD).

The government will also continue the development along the Marina Bay waterfront as well as initiate development southward at the Marina South area to frame the Garden at Marina South.

As for the existing Central Business District, Mr Mah said, there are plans to enhance its public spaces, improve walkways and introduce landscaping and attractive lighting.

Responding to MPs' calls for a more robust "Evening Economy" to make Singapore an attractive 24/7 city, Mr Mah said this is being looked into by a multi-agency committee chaired by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Their focus will be on four areas - Orchard Road, Singapore River, Bras Basah.Bugis and Marina Bay.

The URA will also be initiating a consultancy study for two projects at Marina Bay.

The first is a "Light, Water and Sound show", which will use the Marina Bay city's skyline as the show's centrepiece.

The second is an "Aqua Shell', which is a floating stage for live theatre and musical performances.

For the Bras Basah.Bugis area, the URA is also exploring the feasibility of innovative 'Artvertisements' or advertisements which can also double up as art pieces. - CNA/ir
