    S is for special

Everything about the TTS is special - from its powerful engine and its magnetic ride adaptive suspension to its stylish exterior and interior fittings. By Samuel Ee

S is a very special letter in the Audi lexicon. When present in a model name like S4 or S8, it denotes the high-performance version of that particular range.

For a TT coupe that has been souped-up, the S is attached as a suffix, instead of a prefix, as in TTS. Perhaps it would have been more difficult for 'STT' to roll off the tongue, or perhaps that just sounds like an abbreviated expletive.

Whatever the reason, TTS works - both visually and mechanically. The turbocharged two-litre direct injection engine has had its output boosted to a whopping 272 hp from the 200 horses this four-cylinder unit with forced induction produces in an ordinary TT. This 36 per cent increase was squeezed out by re-engineering and strengthening the engine, and using a larger turbo with reinforced components and a redesigned intake and intercooler.

Also different from the conventional TT is the use of quattro permanent all-wheel-drive and Audi magnetic ride adaptive suspension on the TTS. The latter gets its name from the minute magnetic particles in the fluid circulating within the damper pistons. When an electric charge is applied, the oil's flow properties change the characteristics of the suspension, making it adapt more quickly to the changing road conditions.

The result is that the TTS suspension provides for an excellent combination of control and comfort. The ride may be very firm but it is never harsh. There is a choice of two suspension settings - Normal and Sport. Even in the latter, it doesn't get uncomfortable when the car is going fast on a rough road.

On a smooth stretch of road, though, Audi magnetic ride married to quattro is a match made in heaven. The TTS's handling prowess is so high you will be taking fast corners with wild abandon. It is that confidence-inspiring.

And the drivetrain keeps encouraging you to go faster. The engine is mated to an S tronic transmission - Audi's name for the smooth, quick dual-clutch gearbox. The power plant offers so much torque, with virtually no turbo lag, that it feels like three litres instead of two. The only time you will lift off the gas pedal is if you are stricken with fear - of losing your licence.

The TTS also has an especially sweet soundtrack. The exhaust backfire is loud, and can be made louder by manually changing gears with the steering-mounted shift paddles.

To ensure that everyone else knows the TTS is special, even when it is not moving or emitting an exhaust boom, there has been extensive cosmetic treatment. It has LED running lights and a deeper front apron with a unique chrome treatment. Behind, the rear diffuser stands out with its quad pipes.

Inside, the two-toned interior is covered in Silk Nappa leather. The instruments have cool white needles, instead of the usual red, while the driver information display also has white lettering.

With a compass in the rear view mirror and a rear spoiler that can be deployed at the touch a button, everything about this TTS feels special. Unfortunately, that means there is a price to pay. At $225,000 for the Coupe and $230,000 for the Roadster, the TTS comes at a premium. Then again, few two-litre cars can offer so much driving pleasure.

All you need in a sports car

Audi's TTS has all the must-have elements of a good sports car without the outrageous price tag

Must a good sports car carry a revered emblem? Must a good sports car have a multi-cylinder engine? Must a good sports car be difficult to drive?

And must a good sports car cost half a million dollars or more?

If you think not, then read on. Otherwise, a car such as the Audi TTS would just be a waste of time to you.

And it would be a shame if you were of that opinion.

The TTS is a damn good sports car because it has all the must-have ingredients of good sports cars - ingredients that really matter, anyway.

It looks good. The car is sharper than the already stylish Audi TT, adorned with polished quad tailpipes, new alloy rims, pronounced skirting and lower lip, aluminium wing mirror casings and daylight-running LEDs in its headlamps.

It is as much of a sumptuous feast inside, with sportily stitched nappa leather upholstery (two-tone if you like), brushed metallic inserts and a prominent TTS gear knob, as well as Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

It drives well. The TTS has the same 2-litre direct-injection turbo four-cylinder engine as the garden-variety TT. But it is tuned to produce 272bhp instead of 'merely' 200bhp.

And with 350Nm of torque from just 2,500rpm, it is as eager as an adolescent bunny.

The TTS has sports car credentials alright, hitting 100kmh in 5.2 seconds and on to a regulated top speed of 250kmh.

Progress is as seamless as it is swift, thanks to its six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Equipped with quattro permanent all- wheel-drive and magnetic adaptive suspension, the car offers easy handling and a ride comfort far more commendable than what 'real' sports cars can achieve.

When its Sport setting is selected, the suspension lowers the car by 10mm and its dampers are stiffened. Even then, the ride is not harsh.

Wearing 18-inch wheels and 245/40 tyres, the car goes about its business in a very planted fashion. Its steering wheel is sharp, meaty and nearly as communicative as that of a go-kart.

Its cabin is liveable with a decent level of plushness, good visibility and enough rear room for two medium-built adults.

The TTS sounds good, too. Its four-cylinder power plant, exhaling through four shiny exhausts, makes all the right noises.

In fact, it will pass off easily as a six-cylinder job. The way the car blips its throttle whenever it changes down is also music to the ears.

Together with the car's nimble chassis and its huge power reserve, it makes life behind the wheel quite rewarding.

And the beauty is, you need not be stressed as the speedo rises or the road meanders. The car remains at ease, composed and utterly forgiving.

In other words, all the gain without the pain often associated with piloting a sports car. You know, things like twitchy steering, harsh ride, sledgehammer gear changes and a too-little-or-too-much power delivery.

The cherry on the icing is its price. At $225,000, it is more accessible than a Porsche Cayman, but quicker and better equipped. It makes a similarly priced Lotus Elise seem outrageously expensive.

Sure, it does not have the cachet of the thoroughbred sports marques. Then again, neither does the hotter than hot Nissan GT-R.

For that price... i would rather get a Mercedes SLK ...or a Porsche..

    The WOW Factor is more...
Most people will go WOW and think you are freaking rich when you buy a Mercedes or Porsche as they are associated with the rich.

Audi still have not got the mental association of rich to it.

Maybe compare SLK200, Boxster or Cayman against TT 2.0T?

The TTS seems like the best bet, if you want value for money and FAST FAST FAST. Drawback is the low OMV which translates to high depreciation as compared to rivals; and four cylinder engine, which is seriously unbecoming for a premium sports car like this. SLK200 Kompressor has a 4 cylinder too, which makes it somewhat more of a showoff car than a serious sports car. If you want SLK, then get the SLK350 whose price is only slightly more expensive than TTS.

The Z4 is a good option too, especially the 3.0 litre one. Unfortunately it is due for a new model very very soon.

Cayman and Cayman S, don't try to compare the outright 0-100kmh sprint as it will be nowhere as fast as TTS or SLK350. However, because of its mid-engine RWD layout, it is a serious corner carver. In terms of handling, Cayman/Cayman S will beat them all, yeah even the Z4M (which is as expensive as Cayman S).
