How can air be the same near factories and far from factories? Ask a kid and he will tell you there is a difference without needing even to run pollution tests. Those heavy duty factories with chimneys in jurong also have the license to operate 24/7.

Pollutants index, PM2.5, spikes to 155 in East area of Singapore !

The pollutant concentrations index, better known as the PM2.5 reading, spiked in the East area of Singapore overnight, following complaints from residents in the area of a "burning smell" on Thursday evening.

The one-hour PM2.5 reading in the East area was 97 at 1am, and dropped to 76 before spiking to 155 at 3am. It later fell to 24 at 4am, but at 8am, it shot back up to 51 from 17 at 7am.

PM2.5 readings measure the amount of particulate matter smaller than or equivalent to 2.5 micrometers in size, which are considered to pose the greatest amount of health risk because they can lodge deeply into human lungs.

These levels were all below 22 around the rest of the island overnight, with only the West area showing a reading of 28 at 8am.

On Wednesday evening, residents in Siglap, Pasir Ris, East Coast Road and Bedok reported detecting a "strong burning smell". On Friday morning, commuters travelling from the East noticed hazier-than-usual conditions.

The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the East was also consistently higher than in the rest of the country, staying well above 70 through the night, and stood at 78 at 8am. Around the North, West, South and central regions, PSI levels hovered mostly below 60.

Yahoo Singapore has reached out to the National Environment Agency for more information about the spike in PM2.5 concentrations.

PSI do not measure all those toxic gases in the West!

PSI do not measure all those toxic gases, this is a fact, and you tell to convince us otherwise? Your objective is very questionable, and very NON-honourable!

Nah, see this report here which shows that you are lying that PSI measures all those gases, since if PSI measures all those gases there is no need to specifically conduct more experiments to measure that over 150 types of gases from refineries and petrochemical plants! :

Oil Refinery Toxics Found in Air of Nearby Homes
    March 29, 2010

Test Results Released as EPA Considers Addressing Refinery Pollution

Toxics from a Chevron oil refinery were found in the indoor air of homes in Richmond, California, according to a peer-reviewed study in American Journal of Public Health. The results are being released as the EPA considers measures to reduce pollution from refineries nationwide, and as Chevron is appealing a court decision barring the expansion of one of the nation’s largest refineries in Richmond, California.

Researchers tested samples of indoor and outdoor air for over 150 chemicals in 40 homes in Richmond, California (low-income, predominantly minority neighborhoods bordering a Chevron oil refinery, marine shipping corridors and other polluters), and 10 homes in Bolinas, CA (a non-industrial comparison community). The air indoors, where Americans spend 90 percent of their time, was more polluted than the air outdoors in both communities, with 104 toxics detected inside Richmond homes and 69 in Bolinas.

This study marks the first time that indoor air was tested to fingerprint pollutants from oil refineries and shipping corridors. “We found that living near an oil refinery adds exposures that may be hazardous to your health,” said Julia Brody, PhD, lead author of the study and Executive Director of Silent Spring Institute. “Toxic pollution from oil refineries doesn’t stay outside; it seeps into homes, where people spend most of their time. We hope that federal regulators and the courts will take our findings into consideration as they address air pollution from refineries nationwide.”

Air in Richmond homes had more chemicals present and at higher concentrations than in Bolinas. Fine particulates (PM2.5) were found at concentrations above California’s annual ambient air quality standard in nearly half of Richmond homes even though the residents were nonsmokers. Particulates are considered an aggregate measure of air pollution. Health studies have linked them to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, including premature death.

Levels of vanadium and nickel in Richmond were among the highest in the state, implicating heavy oil combustion from the nearby refinery and marine port. These compounds indicate the presence in homes of hundreds of unmeasured pollutants from the refinery.

Richmond, in Contra Costa County, has high cancer and respiratory risks associated with industrial air toxics. The county’s 15% asthma prevalence rate is among the state’s highest.

“There are a lot of people in this community, a lot of people with cancer. A lot of people with asthma, the children have a high incidence of asthma here,” said one Richmond study participant.

You trust these numbers? Don't be naive lah. Govt has agenda to build and sell more housing there you think they will be so stupid to reveal every detail of of industrial pollutants in the air in jurong and hurt their housing sales?

There is no statistics to prove that the West has higher incidence of illnesses as a result of toxic gas inhalation if they even existed.

    "No statistics to prove"?
All those environmental research reports that are thoroughly conducted in US and Europe and to high exacting standard are not statistics that prove?

More like you are in denial regardless of what is proven overseas....

Makes me recall the recent old man who got cheated by the lie of 2 con women that he owed government a lot of money and he still won't believe when other people tell him this is not true unless a govt official tell him so.............
But too bad, in your case nobody will do so....... They not stupid to slap themselves in the face...................

seriously ... if it is toxic and can kill ... why govt not doing anything ?

if it is toxic ... it would affect everywhere in SG ... not just west side ... the wind can carry it to central and east and north too ...

it in fact will affect every single person in SG...

Please read those environmental research reports I had referred to and posted in this forum.

I just want to make 1 summary: 1 report said most toxic are within about 7km radius.... Of course the wind can carry, but with so much reduced intensity that people living in the rest of the region in Singapore (except the West) are still safe............... The same can't be said about the West which is in the pollution producing zone though.............

If the cow don't want to drink water, there is nothing much we can do, especially when the cow keep making noise BUT still don't want to drink water......

You haven't prove by any iota of data that people in the West has a higher incidence of illnesses related to toxic air inhalation.
You only thought that you found an ounce of an argument against the JLD miracle and went all out to blow it up as if it is a nuclear leak, but you have not able to prove to the 1.2 millions people in the West that they are in dire straits of dying early because of toxic gases.

Slow form of toxic poisoning, not easy to prove though, so it is up to you...

Why you need to keep trying to convince other people that NO SUCH RISK existed despite all the FACTS?????

    Why need to End?
So that you can brush under the carpet?
You got conflict of interest here???

I have no conflict of interest, so I am just talking from a neutral party view, just to warn people don't get CONNED into buying the "great great" WEST touted to be the 2nd CBD at CBD price! You will just be taking over the baby of those with particular "interest" here, who die die must stop us from talking about the air pollution and toxic gases ever present in the "great great" WEST!

You are wrong ... I am prepared to accept the truth if you can prove your statement that people in the West had higher incidence of illness doe to inhalation of toxic gases if they exist. All I hear from you is astatements without facts. We were taught that a partial truth is as deadly as a lie. And it is...when it is a matter of life and death.

Good to hear that the air quality in eastern Singapore remains 'moderate' !
