SINGAPORE —The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has won an international award for its master plan in transforming Punggol into a sustainable waterfront town.

The 2014 Excellence on the Waterfront Awards is the first time the Punggol Master Plan has been honoured with an international accolade, said the HDB in a statement today (Nov 17).

HDB was conferred the award at the Waterfront Centre 2014 Conference in Washington DC on Nov 8.

The award is given in recognition of top quality design and development work on waterfronts, with the HDB being one of two recipients for the Honour Award under the “Plans” category.

The HDB is continuing to develop Punggol as a sustainable waterfront town as part of the master plan over the next five to 10 years. Among the plans are signature waterfront housing districts, such as the Waterway East and West districts, which will be completed by 2015, and the Matilda and Northshore districts.

The Northshore district for example, is Punggol’s first seafront district. According to the HDB it is envisioned to be “smart and sustainable”, with features such as intelligent car parks, smart lighting and smart waste management systems. The first four housing districts in Northshore will be launched in 2015.

HDB chief executive Cheong Koon Hean said: “It is a privilege for us to be recognised on the global stage with this award. HDB will continue to apply our knowledge of sustainable urban planning as a guiding principle for other HDB towns.”
