The pool of foreign labour will keep growing, but at a slower, more sustainable pace, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said yesterday.

The process has been painful for companies, but is necessary to raise productivity in sectors that are still lagging, he added.

The minister was responding to questions at a luncheon during the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce's (SICC's) 173rd annual general meeting (AGM).

Manpower issues were the foremost concern among chamber members and senior business leaders at the event, held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel and attended by about 200 people.

Growth rate varies from unskilled, skilled, and talents.

I suspect you're right. They wouldn't be so silly as to have a big over-supply as that would not be good for the country as a whole

Yes, the loud complainers can choose to don't import any more foreigners, create many jobless citizens, and Singapore will die!

There used to be many cheap import fresh graduates competing with local fresh graduates and their starting pay is at 1.8k. Hope your children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and great great grandchildren will face the same situation.

There is a fallacy to believe that if no foreigners be let into Singapore, the local graduates pay will rise and they will have great pay.
    Far from that.
We may see more local graduates being jobless! No MNC will want to set up shop in Singapore because Singapore just don't have enough talents! This is a fact that people have to face up to.............

If don't import anymore, the main issue is that the complainers may not be the first to die.

Selected others (Govt big shots, big bosses, finance dependent businesses, heavily leveraged persons) die first. These are the strongest proponents of growth, growth, growth - population growth, economic growth, everything must grow.

But I think there is no way we can say stop growing - it just will not happen in SG.
