JAKARTA - Indonesia's National Police (Polri) claim they recovered nearly 1 trillion rupiah (S$102.76 million) from corruption crimes throughout 2013.
"During this year, Polri recovered 915 billion rupiah, up from 201 billion rupiah in 2012," Polri chief General Sutarman said on Friday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the police handled 1,363 corruption cases in 2013, up 13.72 per cent from 1,176 cases the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of corruption cases solved totalled 906 in 2013, up by 27.48 per cent from 249 last year.
Among the total, Sutarman added, there were several conspicuous cases including one implicating Totok Hendriyanto and Denok Taviperina, two civil servants at the finance ministry's directorate general of taxation.
"They allegedly accepted bribes amounting to 1.5 billion rupiah from a taxpayer," Sutarman said.
Another case saw charges of corruption and money laundering brought against Saefrudin, an official at the Entikong Customs and Excise Office in West Kalimantan, while a separate corruption case involved an official at the finance ministry's customs and excise directorate general, Heru Sulastyono, who allegedly accepted around 11 billion rupiah of bribes in the form of insurance policies.
On December 20, officers from the Langkat Police in North Sumatra arrested three people for their involvement in a corruption case surrounding the government-funded childbirth coverage scheme, Jampersal, at the Langkat Health Agency in 2013.
"They allegedly cut Jampersal funding by around 10 per cent and 1.65 billion rupiah was confiscated as evidence from the case," Sutarman said.
On December 23, the police arrested eight suspects, six of whom were Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) members, for their alleged involvement in a bribery case relating to a road development project in Seruyan regency, Central Kalimantan. "We confiscated 2.08 billion rupiah," Sutarman said.
