'Expertly managed' HDB build bags award

Published on Oct 29, 2013

CASA Clementi, the Housing Board's largest public housing project, has been recognised by a leading global association for being expertly managed during its construction.

This is the first time Singapore has won the Distinguished Project Award from the world's largest association for project managers, the Project Management Institute, said an HDB statement.

The 20 award categories conferred by the United States headquartered institute honour organisations and individuals worldwide who show exemplary performance of project management. The winning HDB project, comprising 10 high-rise blocks with 2,234 units, is in Clementi Town. Despite its scale and proximity to other developments, Casa Clementi was completed last year ahead of schedule and within budget.

A concerted effort was made by project managers to reduce noise and traffic congestion for nearby Nan Hua High School and HDB blocks in Clementi Avenue 1. This was done via dialogue sessions with the school and residents, and by installing barriers to cut noise pollution during piling works.

Unexpected emergencies were also handled well, said HDB. A World War II bomb relic found in the project's early stages was dealt with calmly and swiftly.

Besides HDB, other project partners include urban planner Surbana International Consultants and Straits Construction Singapore.

HDB deputy chief executive officer (building) Sng Cheng Keh said the latest award was an affirmation of the board's commitment to "excellent project management as we continue to provide innovative housing choices and a high quality living environment while being mindful of the needs of residents".
