HDB took gold in the Public Infrastructures/Amenities category, which involves projects financed and developed with public funds.

Chief executive Cheong Koon Hean said the award was a testament to the HDB's commitment to create vibrant communities.

"Many in Punggol have told us how much they enjoy and appreciate the waterway. We will continue to do our best," he said.

The 4.2km landscaped waterway provides a waterfront experience as well as amenities and communal space for 21,000 homes. The waterway was originally built to create a pipeline transferring water between the Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs and to expand Singapore's water catchment area.

Fiabci, an international real estate federation with chapters in more than 60 countries, evaluates projects based on their architecture, construction, community benefit and environment impact.

Last year, HDB took a runner- up award in the Master Plan category for the innovative use of space at the mixed development Clementi Town Centre.

It was the first local development which combined public housing, a mall and a bus interchange.

The other Singapore gold winners last night were YTL Land for Sandy Island in Sentosa, Far East Organization for the Novena Lifestyle and Medical Hub, Park Hotel Group for the Grand Park Orchard, Orchard Turn Retail Investment for Ion Orchard and Keppel Land for Reflections at Keppel Bay. Frasers Centrepoint clinched the silver for Soleil@Sinaran.

Fiabci Singapore president Lim Lan Yuan said: "Our Singapore projects continue to do us proud and this reflects the talent and creativity of our development teams."
