ECG Property may fire 56 erring agents

Some caught moonlighting, others misusing firm's client database

    By Felda Chay

ECG Property is considering firing 56 of its agents who may have run afoul of regulations set by estate agency watchdog, the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA).

ECG chief executive officer Eric Cheng said that some were caught moonlighting, while others were using client information from the firm's database to sell other products.

A number also had collected deposits from potential tenants on behalf of landlords who wanted to rent out their homes, which is not allowed by CEA.

"We sent a few warning letters to some of them but they just ignored the warnings," said Mr Cheng, adding that the agents will be given a chance to explain themselves before the company hands them a termination letter.

ECG's chief operating officer, Andy Lye, said that dismissing errant agents would help to protect the company's brand and its clients. "We cannot afford for our brand to be impacted negatively by rogue consultants, thus the need to eradicate those who are not abiding by industry rules and regulations," said Mr Lye.

The group also introduced to its agents a manual on the dos and don'ts of the industry yesterday. The 35-page Consultant Operations Manual was written by the group's in-house lawyers, said Mr Cheng. "We've told our agents that they must finish reading the manual and acknowledge every clause by July 31," he added.

"The manual covers things like the attire they should wear, what sort of name cards they can print and carry, how they should do their presentations to clients, guidelines on advertisements and where they can put up fliers, and what they can say in the fliers."

CEA has been clamping down on non-compliant salespersons. Earlier this month, it took to task two property agents for acting against the interests of consumers. One was handed a $3,000 fine and suspended for three months while the other had to pay a $2,500 fine and write a letter of apology to a complainant.

CEA also warned agencies earlier in the year against acts such as pitching tents or other structures along the roadside without approval. Tents are commonly erected to drum up interest in a new project, especially when the showflat is not ready. Agents were also reminded that they cannot distribute fliers along the roadside. They also cannot place advertisement banners on public property such as lamp posts, railings and trees.
