Default HDB to recreate that kampung spirit (pontianak ar?)

Well planned timing or mere coincidence? You decide.

SINGAPORE - There is a need to build greater community among HDB residents.

Minister for National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan wrote in a blog entry on May 18 this year: "Building community is not a new mission, but we are giving it greater emphasis. As I said so before, we should now try to recreate the old kampong in our HDB towns."

In 2009, HDB formed a Community Relations Group (CRG) to foster community ties in the heartlands. This group would design meaningful programmes to help residents feel a greater sense of belonging and attachment to their communities.

The CRG's initiatives include the Good Neighbour Award as well as organizing welcome parties for residents at every newly completed BTO precincts.

This upcoming Community Week is part of HDB's overall strategy to further strengthen community bonds and recreate the old kampong spirit in HDB towns.

The public can look forward to a series of community events for the rest of the week from May 21 to 27.

These events range from heartland ambassadors sharing positive messages on the street, an eco-art structure by the community, to the first vertical walk in the HDB heartland.

It could be misconstrued as using tax payers money to promote the interest and influence of the ruling party.

    Good one!

I dislike the kampong spirit. Loud weddings and funerals, kids n dogs running along the corridor, clothes/bicycles/junk/old things stored along the corridor.

very near in the future - singaporeans must learn how to speak tagalog, burmese and mandarin in order to "integrate" ourselves to the newcomers.

Pls dont spread that mentality. They should be the ones to pick up Singlish and dialects since they are the 'guests'. In Rome, do as the Romans do. In Singapore, speak as the sinkies speak!

Waitresses in restaurants are from Philippines/China and servers in coffee shops are from China. Although Singapore has always been a migrant country, the situation then and now are different. In the past, migrant workers came here to build a life and live here permanently; they want to earn enough money to bring their families over to live in Singapore. Whereas now, migrant workers are mostly here to make a quick buck, then return home with the money; they can't afford to live here and they can go back to their home countries to retire comfortably. Because of the latter's mentality, i.e. with no concern for Singapore's long-term prosperity, allowing them to work here is detrimental to Singapore's prosperity. They can perform poor at their jobs but Singapore is left with the poor reputation. We should only allow migrants with vested interest to work and live here.

recently got that simi water splashing festival in the simi integrating singaporean campaign.

soon curry will be banned in hawker centres, along with fish head curry, roti prata curry, chicken curry. Hawkers who wishes to sell curry must apply for a special permit from the foreign country embassy(apply doesnt mean they will approve, unless you know how to cigarette+wine烟酒烟酒).

soon all our roads will change from left hand drive to right hand drive so that the new immigrants will feel like driving at home - without having to look left or right.

soon new laws will be enacted, motor vehicles will always have the right of the way, green man or no green man, you die your problem no court case no nothing cos life is cheap.

soon all visual impaired singaporeans must know how to ask what bus number is this in mandarin ONLY if they must take the bus as transport. If not, it is alright for the bus captains to just act DUMB or worse just close the door and drive off.
*This thing already happened a couple of year back.

Whats the diff? Sinkies also accept overseas postings for the exposure and $$$. We also dont expect to uproot our family here over. Nor stay longer than necessary. The other active thread already has one case as we speak...

Indonesia is becoming greedy, tightening all their resources to Singapore. sands, stones , and now maids, cannot do this and that, min pay, agent fee, etc.

    Nex closer source is Philippines.

Actually immigrants then and now are the same. They talk loudly and spit everywhere. The diff is everyone talk loudly then, but only immigrant talk loudly now

And there was no internet then, and we have Internet now behaving like 三姑六婆 spreading and amplifying all teeny weeny things that some immigrants had done.

The true kampung spirit entails beating off errant neighbours with a broom stick... Locals or immigrant regardless. Oh well at least that was how the SBC tv drama shows its done then... Esp amongst the 五脚基。

My dad said during the kampong days, chicken droppings were all over the table and ground, just stepped on them till they became part of the floor, rats and cats were all over the place.
Nowadays, people see 1 cat in the neighbourhood they call AVA to remove the cat.

My dad said a neighbour's daughter got shot in one eye with a catapult. She probably went blind in one eye.
Nowadays, somebody scold a kid, the parents already make a big deal out of it.

Do we really want the kampong spirit running wild??

Heartlands boom, OCR boom time at least till next GE.

This kind of policy runs at least 5-10 years.

Why not. I am sick of clean room environment... Children who grow up in such env fall sick in both body and mind once they grow up and travel to places like China or India.

Is KBW saying we should balik kampung? Will never happen. The kampung must haves:

    1. Lots and lots of kids. Ah Gong, Ah Ma, uncles, aunties, cousins all living together.
    2. Can rear chickens, goats, dogs, cats, ducks and let them run around.
    3. Can keep your barang barang outside your house.
    4. Can keep your front door open 24/7.

HDB so many rules, how to be kampung like?

The less you have, the more you share. The more you have, the less you share.

The ideal meeting place must be spacious, windy, blocked from west sun, plenty of trees and seats, clean and beautiful and harmonious with good view, ppl feel safe without road traffic, children can play while parents tcss and with frequent performance. This is the pride of each hdb town.
