SINGAPORE - There is a need to build greater community among HDB residents.
Minister for National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan wrote in a blog entry on May 18 this year: "Building community is not a new mission, but we are giving it greater emphasis. As I said so before, we should now try to recreate the old kampong in our HDB towns."
In 2009, HDB formed a Community Relations Group (CRG) to foster community ties in the heartlands. This group would design meaningful programmes to help residents feel a greater sense of belonging and attachment to their communities.
The CRG's initiatives include the Good Neighbour Award as well as organizing welcome parties for residents at every newly completed BTO precincts.
This upcoming Community Week is part of HDB's overall strategy to further strengthen community bonds and recreate the old kampong spirit in HDB towns.
The public can look forward to a series of community events for the rest of the week from May 21 to 27.
These events range from heartland ambassadors sharing positive messages on the street, an eco-art structure by the community, to the first vertical walk in the HDB heartland.
