More residential developments to receive Construction Excellence Award
- 17 award winners and 11 certificates of merit in 2012
- High quality condominiums on the rise, fuelled by improvements to construction quality and workmanship standards as well as higher expectations for building quality
- Woh Hup (Private) Limited clinches the most number of awards in two consecutive years
Singapore, 25 April 2012 - More residential developments will receive the Construction Excellence Award this year - 10 awards and 7 certificates of merit are conferred to residential buildings this year, compared to 5 awards and 5 certificates of merit given out in 2011. The total number of award winners and certificates of merit this year is the same as last year.
"The increase is largely attributed to more high quality condominiums, fuelled by improvements to construction quality and workmanship standards as well as higher expectations for building quality," commented Mr Lai Huen Poh, Chairman of the Construction Excellence Award Assessment Committee comprising a panel of judges from the industry.
The average Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS) score for buildings in general has risen to 85.7 compared to 76.5 ten years ago. Also, there are over 47,000 private residential units committed or assessed under the BCA Quality Mark (QM) scheme to date.
"This year, condominiums like The Arte, The Orchard Residences, The Cascadia, Wilkie Studio and Marina Bay Residences emerged top performers in the residential building category for construction excellence, with CONQUAS scores above 94. Besides achieving high quality, these projects also meet other criteria such as safety, sustainability, buildability, and innovativeness," Mr Lai added.
For example, Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd constructed The Orchard Residences, its first Quality Mark certified project, through productive construction methods such as precast construction and the installation of unitised curtain walls. This helped improve construction productivity and buildability, while achieving good structural finishes. Also, stringent in-process quality control checks ensured quality internal finishes.
City Developments Limited (CDL) is the developer for both The Arte and Wilkie Studio. Mr Anthony Chia, Director of Projects, CDL said, "CDL takes pride in the high quality standards of our developments. BCA's CONQUAS and QM provide a trusted and comprehensive assessment system to measure the quality of construction and workmanship excellence, and serve as a validation of our product quality. These authoritative endorsements are especially important as expectations of quality excellence by homebuyers are ever-increasing. Securing good CONQUAS scores and meeting QM standards continue to be a priority for CDL."
Local builder Woh Hup (Private) Limited also clinched the highest number of Construction Excellence Awards for the second consecutive year. To meet the changing demands of the construction industry and consistently deliver high quality, innovative building solutions, builders at Woh Hup are trained to meet stringent quality control guidelines, and overcome construction difficulties through innovations to the construction process and good project management.
This year, Woh Hup received 3 awards for its projects - The Cascadia, Marina Bay Residences and The Seafront on Meyer. All three projects attained high CONQUAS scores of 95.6, 94.4 and 93.0 respectively.
Commenting on the achievement, Mr Eugene Yong Kon Yoon, Director, Woh Hup (Private) Limited said, "Woh Hup is honoured to be receiving 3 Construction Excellence Awards this year, this adds up to a total of 34 Construction Excellence and Merits Awards that we have received to date. These awards reflect well on the consistency in quality of our work and the continuous improvements of our Quality Management System. It requires that the skills and knowledge of our staff and workers be upgraded by the various training courses provided. Woh Hup is grateful to our partners, namely the developers, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and our staff for their hard work, commitment and teamwork, to make the projects a success."
Other notable projects this year include Shuqun Secondary School, with a CONQUAS score of 93.0, the highest score under the institutional building category to date. Ion Orchard and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital are also top performers in the commercial/mixed development and institutional building categories respectively.
Since the Construction Excellence Award was introduced in 1986, BCA has conferred 187 awards and 180 certificates of merit. BCA continues to recognise the commitment and efforts of builders, developers and consultants in delivering construction excellence in our built environment.
The winners of this year's BCA Construction Excellence Award will receive their award at the BCA Awards on 24 May 2012.
