Not good news to northern home owners and investors.
Not good news to northern home owners and investors.
Even now, just stand at the punggol jetty beach and loo across. Its not a beautiful sight. The real bad news is that its something we cannot control. We can't control how others choose, intentionally or unintentionally, to face their ass.
is OK, nothing much to look at anyways
there's a sea separating the 2 countries - both physical and symbolic
Do u know that pollution can affect the whole island depending on wind direction? Look at all the smoke around us. Nowhere in Singapore is spared.Originally Posted by mantrix

Yup, bad area.Originally Posted by DC33_2008
East should be the best?
Some petrochemical plants use river water or sea water for cooling. It is common for the heat exchangers to leak and the pollutants will flow into the water bodies. It is also common for process upset that results in materials sent to the flare stacks, which might not be operated properly. This is bad news for residents staying in the north.
But is it confirmed? Malaysia usually likes to announce grand plans without good follow-ups.
Oredi got chemical plants....add 1 more ok lor....lolOriginally Posted by hyenergix
Adding refineries is the start for the growth of downstream chemical plants. If true, then the residents there can look forward to more chemical plants in the near future.
Den whole sg will not b spared.... Better hf a backup planOriginally Posted by hyenergix
New plants that are making $ are not a major issues. Old corroded plants that are not making $ are safety hazards. The residents will probably see the problems in another 10-20 years' time.

Feasibility study is underway. Infrastructure development that genetrates $ is quite likely to come true. The queston now is the site as the prevailing wind direction in singapore is NE and SW.Originally Posted by hyenergix
Believe Sgp can voice concern on the ground of environmental pollution to population etc. Block it if possible? There could be international guideline nonsuch issues. For example they cannot just build a nuclear plant just across right even if it is not near to any of their population?

It is difficult. See what Simon Tay has been pushing for the haze issue but it is still around today. They will tell you the effluent from the stacks will be conformed to WHO standards, etc. Even in Singapore, developments near Jurong Island still get the soot. $ seems to be more important than people's health.Originally Posted by Komo
Yes, sg should voice up. Foreign minister should say something, why is George yeo keep quiet, is time to voice up..hahaha...oops..ehhh..ask tpl to commentOriginally Posted by Komo
Eh.. in the straits time article..., the Johore(not JB) refinery complex is going to be situated east of Changi Airport ..
Google maps, go to Pengerang , Johor.
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...8&sec=business
Basically, Malaysia wants the whole of Johor to be filed with heavy industries to smoke us out.. hehe..
Btw, the reason cited was it allows VLCC to go there coz of the depth of the water. My question is .. why Malaysia never built mega port to take away PSA business? Or is it going to happen soon?
based on map in yest's ST, seems like the plant will be at east of s'pore.....? dunno if will affect our ecp beach....

Massive Johor refinery to pull in S$49b in investments
04:45 AM May 14, 2012
PENGERANG (Johor) - The mammoth Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) in south-eastern Johor will become Malaysia's biggest development project with Prime Minister Najib Razak revealing yesterday that investors are ready to pump in RM120 billion (S$49 billion) into the refinery hub.
"The RAPID project is part of the Economic Transformation Programme, and the government has identified it as a high-impact project with enormous economic spin-offs for the people in the area," Mr Najib said at RAPID's official launch at Pengerang yesterday.
The Prime Minister said RAPID will transform Johor into one of the world's biggest hubs for oil and gas, Bernama reported. Besides Malaysian oil company Petronas, Mr Najib said a Taiwanese oil and gas company and German firm BASF will be pumping money into the area.
RAPID will be able to produce 9 million tonnes of petroleum products and 4.5 million tonnes of petrochemicals annually.
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim, yesterday said that the massive refinery project was a "blessing" for the state, and that residents should be happy that their children will not have to move elsewhere to find jobs.
Pengerang, less than 5km from Singapore's Pulau Tekong, will all but vanish with the arrival of the refineries.
Residents, who are dependent on fishing, are concerned with pollution from the plants. Agencies
