Most probably it will not become another Chernobyl due to its newer design. But still will have significant amount of radiation leakage if not contained.

NISA have confirmed the presence of caesium-137 and iodine-131 in the vicinity of Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1

Caesium-137 is water-soluble and chemically toxic in small amounts. The biological behavior of caesium-137 is similar to that of potassium and rubidium. After entering the body, caesium gets more or less uniformly distributed through the body, with higher concentration in muscle tissues and lower in bones. The biological half-life of caesium is rather short at about 70 days.Experiments with dogs showed that a single dose of 3800 μCi/kg (approx. 44 μg/kg of caesium-137) is lethal within three weeks.

One of the most dangerous radioactive materials is Cobalt-60:

The idea of the cobalt bomb originated with Leo Szilard who publicized it in Feb. 1950, not as a serious proposal for weapon, but to point out that it would soon be possible in principle to build a weapon that could kill everybody on earth (see Doomsday Device in Questions and Answers). To design such a theoretical weapon a radioactive isotope is needed that can be dispersed world wide before it decays. Such dispersal takes many months to a few years so the half-life of Co-60 is ideal.

The five trucks shot 30 tons of water at the No. 3 reactor building of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, in an attempt to cool the pool storing spent nuclear fuel rods outside the reactor containment.

But the radiation level remained more or less unchanged at around 3,600 microsievert per hour after the trucks completed their work

And smoke emitting from unit 2

MFA advises S'poreans in Fukushima & Miyagi to evacuate immediately

SINGAPORE : Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has strongly recommended that Singaporeans currently in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures evacuate immediately.

It added that Singaporeans in prefectures neighbouring Fukushima, such as Yamagata and Niigata, as well as in the Kanto region (Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi) consider leaving if they have no pressing reasons to remain there.

    english.kyodonews.jp :
    - 130 Tokyo firefighters sent to Fukushima nuke plant
    - Water-dousing at nuke plant eyed for Fri. afternoon: Defense Ministry
    - Radiation down consistently at one point in Fukushima plant
    - Cooling down Fukushima reactors to take several weeks: U.S. regulator

=> Things will improve if they can restore power to certain units to pump water again

=> I think the news of Japanese government planning to selling 10 trillion ($124 billion) of emergency bond is also one reason why Dow futures manages to perform strongly. It eases the concern that Jap government will dump US treasuries to raise cash. However, this would risk bond rating downgrade for Japan depending on how long is the term of the bond and whether it is sold abroad or locally.

I think food and material parts supplies from Japan will be hit for months. This will cause another round of inflation in Singapore and worldwide.

All the more Singaporeans will buy private just to be so close to a bomb shelter should the need arises. No need to rush and push down flights of stairs and fight with your neighbours for that one CD shelter in another block...

Japan detects abnormal radiation levels in food
    Posted: 19 March 2011 2020 hrs

OSAKA - Japan has detected abnormal levels of radiation in milk and spinach near a stricken nuclear plant, but the foods pose no immediate threat to humans, government spokesman Yukio Edano said Saturday.

Traces of radioactive iodine were meanwhile found in tap water in Tokyo and several prefectures near the atomic power complex, a science ministry official said, but the levels were well below the legal limit.

Traces of radioactive caesium were also found in tap water in Tochigi and Gunma.

But "the figures are well within the safety standards for drinking water," said the official, who did not want to be named.

Where are those guys and previous government who approve the building of nuclear plant and assure Japanese public that nuclear plant was safe to build ??

Like casino, Singapore government can assure Singaporeans using all kinds of talk but when things happens, most probably the guys who oversaw the building of nuclear are either retired or died.

Where will be the accountability and responsibility then ??

No politics in this forum please.

Japan crisis is history, no more financial impact to the market.

The new Allied is bombing Libya but ignore the bloodshed in Yemen

That's why US bond yield is still so low and USD still is reserve of many countries, simply because it still the only military superpower of the world.
US can only kill itself with inflation ...

This is under Coffeeshop Talk section , anything goes in this section.

Besides, the questions I asked are valid questions connecting to the thread title.

Nuclear and financial meltdown or not, all the promises stated in building a nuclear plant have all lost credibility.

Default Buffett says Japan quake a 'buying opportunity'

SEOUL - US BILLIONNAIRE investor Warren Buffett said on Monday that a massive natural disaster would not hamper the future of the Japanese economy and could prompt a new bout of stock buying.

'I'm not looking at Japan's economic future differently from 10 days ago... extraordinary events offer (a) buying opportunity,' he told reporters.

Buffett, the chairman of investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, was visiting South Korea to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for a local unit of Israel's Iscar Metalworking Companies, 80 per cent owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Japan's Nikkei index lost around 10 per cent in the week following the devastating March 11 quake and tsunami. Buffett, however, urged against selling Japanese stock - markets were closed in Tokyo on Monday - and said Japan would recover relatively quickly, Yonhap news agency said.

The disaster, which has left 8,649 people dead and 13,262 missing, could cost the Japanese economy up to US$235 billion (S$298.1 billion), the World Bank said on Monday.

Growth, however, should pick up in subsequent quarters 'as reconstruction efforts, which could last five years, accelerate', it said. -- AFP

I agreed. Note the "ed" (I suppose Devil agreed too)
A few friends of mine had been buying, at various times though.
Let's hope the sun will still rise from the East

This is a perfect opportunity for Japan to boost domestic consumption. Market still has faith on Japan, so the massive gov deficit can be sustained. A bit like the US.
