Once this nuclear plant is built, property prices for entire Singapore will dropped.

Look at Japan, everyone is leaving.

    Hurrah.

They are out of their freaking mind. People like WKS can't even keep a terrorist like Mas Selamat from escaping from a detention centre, how can people trust them to prevent a nuclear leak. It takes just one accident to wipe out the entire population of Singapore. If they set up a plant in Singapore, I vow to sell every asset I have and leave the country for good. I won't take back my words.

    an article expounding thorium:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/c...h-thorium.html

    sounds like a wonderful alternative!
read further below for the users' comments though (? true to what extent):
thorium reactors produce uranium-232, which is a strong gamma ray emitter. This means that the material can't be safely handled with current methods since it takes a lot more than a little bit of lead to stop a gamma ray.

The people who approved and build the nuclear plant assured Japanese all will be fine.

These same group of people did nothing when the nuclear plant accident happen.

Either they are dead or retired but no resposibility given to them so the present government and people suffer.

    I see pros outweigh cons.

Now Wanbao even report radiation can be felt as far as Iceland.

Singapore is too small for nuclear risks.

Everything has a risk and this risk is too much for Singapore to bear.

I hope the 4 million dollar PM Lee can find uniquely Singapore better solutions rather than copy and paste other countries solutions.

Risk is a funny thing. Hard to define and harder to quantify.

    For example closer to home,
Fixed deposit is supposedly safer than stocks, forex, bonds.
Yet at the end of the day, it is riskier as fixed deposit cannot beat inflation, hence what is initially a safe instrument turns out to be an unsafe instrument.

So back to nuclear plant question.
All of you talk about the risk of having a nuclear plant.
What about the risk of not having a nuclear plant?

To me risk of having nuclear power outweighs risk of not having nuclear power.

No nuclear for me, you might differ though. That is your right.

Why don't you elaborate since you brought up this question.

Maybe you can look around the present environment since we are not using nuclear power yet, let us know if you notice any risk of no nuclear power today.

The risk of having nuclear power is already well documented and visible by latest Japanese accident.

For me, knowing the risk of nuclear power alone is enough for me to oppose it.

No matter how much assurance or scare tactic government give, I oppose nuclear power plant in Singapore.

Sidetrack a bit but still related to the discussion on nuclear power...... Have you guys read this 'children's book', City of Ember, which had been made into a movie as well?

If you have not read the book or watch the movie, I recommend that you do so. And read the sequels too if you think you can handle the truth about a future without fossil fuel and other source of manmade energy.

    http://www.jeanneduprau.com/books.shtml

    The message is simple.

Pride + Ego + Politics + Nuclear power = destruction of mankind and Earth

It's Earth day today. Think about your children and future generations. Then decide what you must do to leave them a world that they can still live in.

Biofuel is the way to go, not nuclear. Too much will be at stake if we run on nuclear

What use is $$$ when u find that everything around you is destroyed? I came upon a Cree Indian Prophecy that reads:

Only when the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, only if the last fish has been caught, only then you find that money cannot be eaten.

Don't read me wrong. I'll be a hypocrite if I say I do not want more $. What I am advocating here is that when you are spending $$$ to buy some happiness, make sure you ask your self if you really need it and if it is gonna kill the future generation faster than expected.

Like casinos, nuclear plant will happen after GE 2011.

They will go through a process of wayang before concluding it must be build.

    Good luck.

This I do not know, as i do not really care enough to take every prophecy seriously.

But when I come upon one or two quotes that are sound and makes sense, I try and live by what it teaches.

Singapore nuclear decision "long way away": government

Singapore is "a long way away" from a decision on whether to include nuclear power as part of its energy policy, a senior government official said on Monday.

    S. Iswaran, the Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, said a "pre-feasibility study" was being carried out in order to "better understand the complex field of nuclear energy."

But "even with the completion of the pre-feasibility study, we will still be a long way away from making any decisions on nuclear energy for Singapore per se," Iswaran told parliament.

He said the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was crippled by the March 11 quake and tsunami, made it even more crucial for Singapore to embark on the study.

Insights gained from the study will enable Singapore to understand the industry better since its neighbours including Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia have indicated plans to use atomic power.

"Even if we do not proceed with nuclear energy for Singapore, we need to understand its implications for the region and for us in Singapore," Iswaran said.

The city-state currently generates its power from oil and gas fired power stations.

The month-old nuclear plant crisis in Japan has triggered concerns globally on the use of nuclear power plants to supplement existing energy sources.

But Iswaran said nuclear power cannot be ruled out as an option because of the world's growing thirst for increasingly scarce energy supplies.

No decision made on nuclear energy: PM Lee

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Wednesday that the Government has made "no decision" on nuclear energy but that it is an important issue for the country in the long term.

He was responding to a question on whether he had discussed the issue of nuclear power with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in town on a two-day visit.

Dr Merkel's visit comes days after she made the announcement on Monday that Germany will shut all of its 17 nuclear power plants by 2022. The country also outlined an ambitious strategy to abandon nuclear energy over the next eleven years.

This after the issue of nuclear energy as a safe and viable alternative source of energy has been called into question in the wake of Japan's recent Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

Giving his take on the nuclear energy issue, PM Lee said, "It is an immediate issue for Germany, and is a significant issue for Singapore really for the longer term. We have made no decision on nuclear energy."

"We need to understand it because I think this is something, a subject that will not go away. And even if we don't do nuclear energy, our neighbours will do nuclear energy and we need to study the implications for us."

Saying that both leaders had a "very good discussion", PM Lee added that the visit showed the strength of the bilateral relations, The Straits Times reported.

And Dr Merkel's visit clearly showed the German's interest in strengthening its investments, ties and engagement in South-east Asia and Singapore, he added.

PM Lee said that there were also more opportunities to build on the relationship of both countries and this includes collaborating in fields such as research and development as well as green technology.

Dr Merkel also announced a new exchange programme that will enable scientists to conduct their work in research centres on both sides.

During their hour-long meeting at the Istana, both leaders also discussed on issues surrounding Singapore, Asia and Europe, as well as broader topics such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and financial market regulations.
