Two CityDev projects get Green Mark Platinum awards

CITY Developments Ltd (CDL) has been conferred two BCA Green Mark Platinum awards by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) for 2007.

CDL won the awards for its City Square Mall commercial development and its Oceanfront @ Sentosa Cove residential project. It is the first private developer to get a Green Mark Platinum award. Previously they have gone to public sector developments.

The 700,000 sq ft City Square Mall is a prototype eco-friendly, community-friendly mall projected to use almost 40 per cent less energy than a standard design.

A project must achieve 30 per cent energy and water savings and incorporate environmentally-sustainable building practices and innovative green features to be in the running for a Green Mark Platinum award. CDL has gained more green mark awards than any other private developer - 14 so far.

'Minimising the impact of our business on the environment has always been an integral part of CDL's corporate mission,' said managing director Kwek Leng Joo. 'We have been adopting the green building approach since 2001 and we are glad that our efforts are in line with the government's vision to be a socially responsible, environmentally conscious global city.'

SINGAPORE: City Developments Limited (CDL) has just been awarded the Building and Construction Authority's Green Mark Platinum Award for its soon-to-be built City Square Mall.

The shopping mall's eco-friendly features include a urinal that uses no water and sensors that monitor carbon monoxide levels in the air.

The mall will also have green features such as a roof garden, urban park and an eco-roof that harnesses solar power while keeping the plaza cool.

CDL is the first private developer to win the platinum award that recognises exemplary green projects that effectively demonstrate energy and water savings, and possess environmentally sustainable building practices and innovative green features.

Singaporeans will be able to enjoy the eco-mall, located at the junction of Kitchener and Serangoon Roads, in two years' time.

City Developments said its building is not just a mall, but an eco-learning mall.

Allen Ang, Senior Manager, Projects Division, CDL, said: "In designing City Square Mall, we do not just look at the hardware. 'Hardware' means the eco-features. We have also planned for the software, which is to influence our tenants and shoppers to go green with us.

"We provide eco-learning for the features we put in. We organise campaigns and events to invite tenants and shoppers to participate in learning about environmental conservation."

Through innovations such as motion sensors to control lighting levels and a central air-conditioning facility, City Square Mall expects to reduce 5,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission annually and enjoy cost-savings of almost 39 percent.

"With green buildings, I believe we'll contribute to reducing global warming. And of course we would enjoy savings and see benefits in operational efficiency," said Mr Ang.

CDL has also won the platinum award for its work on a private residence, The Oceanfront @ Sentosa Cove, bringing its total number of Green Mark awards to 16.

New mall receives highest green mark

It will include a park, waste system to encourage recycling, air-purging system

    By Jessica Cheam

GO GREEN: City Developments' City Square Mall and Sentosa Cove development have been designed with green and energy efficient features. City Square is expected to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 5,700 tonnes a year.

THE future City Square Mall, which will open in 2009, has become the first shopping mall handed the highest accolade for green buildings - the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum Award.

The mall, to be located at the junction of Serangoon Road and Kitchener Road, will be the first to integrate a park within its grounds and incorporate a pneumatic waste collection system providing separate chutes for food and dry waste, to encourage recycling.

Combined with other eco-friendly features, such as solar panels and an air-purging system that extracts smoke to improve indoor air quality, the 700,000 sq ft mall is expected to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 5,700 tonnes a year.

Launched in 2005, the BCA Green Mark scheme rates buildings on their environmental impact and performance.

Mr Kwek Leng Joo, managing director of City Developments Ltd (CDL), which is building the mall, cited a recent study by the United Nations Environmental Programme, which said green building design and energy-efficient features could reduce the global output of carbon dioxide by 1.8 billion tonnes a year.

CDL also received a platinum award for residential project The Oceanfront@Sentosa Cove, which has integrated features such as energy-efficient air-conditioners and hot-water systems.

The five towers, comprising 264 units, will also harvest rainwater to water the gardens and use prefabricated components to reduce construction waste.

Almost 5 per cent of the construction cost of the two projects went into implementing these green features.

City Square Mall is not the only mall to go green.

Frasers Centrepoint is also rolling out energy audits for its seven retail malls to make them more energy-efficient.

Asia Malls' Century Square has also jumped on the bandwagon, conducting energy audits and using Newater in its cooling towers.

Shopper Tania Goh, 24, a bank executive, said she is encouraged to see malls go green.

'It makes for a better shopping experience, and any money that is saved from being energy- efficient will ultimately be passed down to us consumers as cheaper prices,' she said.
