View Full Version : Flood Prone Condos
Gentle Reflections and Tessarina in Bukit Timah had their basement carparks filled with waters that comes once in fifty years.
For Tessarina, time flies, and "fifty years" went by in less than 2 human years.
Once a car is totally submerged, probably need to scrap. Unless one wants to strip the car to its carcass, and rebuild...may not be worth it. Insurance will probably declare "Act of God". Condo management will point to sign board telling motorists they park "at own risk".
Perhaps, we shud keep track of those condos with history of flooding, and allow us to follow old adage of CAVEAT EMPTOR.
These are the PUB identified flood prone low lying areas in Singapore:
i) Chinatown (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0);)/ City area
(Mosque Street (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0);), Pagoda Street, Temple Street, Trengganu Street, Upper Pickering Street (between South Bridge (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0);) Road and New Bridge Road), South Bridge Road, Upper Hokien Street (between South Bridge Road and New Bridge Road), Chulia Street (beside UOB Plaza), Circular Road and McCallum Street / Boon Tat Link.
ii) Tanjong Katong area
(Dakota Crescent, Meyer Place, Meyer Road, Dunman Road, Fort Road, Rose Lane and Stadium Road)
iii) Geylang area
(Guillemard Road (between Lor 26 to 32 Geylang), Lor 4 to Lor 22, Geylang, Lor 101 to 106, Changi (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0);) Road and Langsat Road)
iv) Area off Jalan Besar (between Weld Road and Kitchener Road)
v) Lorong Buangkok
Cluny Court?
Telok Kurau?
Opera Estate?

Perhaps areas near reservoirs are safe from floods.

How to explain floods in Thomson area?
Got MacRitchie and Pierce next door, still flood!

That true. But perhaps areas nearer are ok. eg I suppose the waterfront series fronting the bedok reservoirs should be quite safe. Usually areas immediately surrounding reservoirs have very large drainage, some could even run through the development.

all the condos on Pasir panjang hill .. pepys hill , kent ridge mid hill all safe
notice the flood areas are central and east ... ?

In Dec 2006, after days of heavy rain, the thomson nurseries were badly flooded by surging waters from MacRitchie Reservoir.
http://www.wildsingapore.com/news/20061112/061220-1.htm#to1
Freak weather do happen, in 2001, a typhoon hit Johor and affected Singapore as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_Storm_Vamei
...but orchard road was not flooded...:beats-me-man:
Come to think of it....projects near reservoirs need to "worry" of possibility of surging water from the reservoir, I can also imagine that the ground could be softer, possibly from the water seeping through the ground from reservoir....are projects near reservoirs required to design and build with such risks considered?

Anyone know which lorong in TK floods?

Saying it is act of god is an insult to god. This is clear cut gross negligence. They get some idiot foreign workers who sweep litters into drains - so long nobody sees it, his job is done. And of course, no checks and balances from relevant departments - the ultimate failure I feel. They are the managers but they failed to supervise.
If everything can be attributed to god, there shouldn't be insurance company around. And no need to court. Because everything is act of god. What kind of nonsense is that. If a tree falls during heavy rain, it is the lack of maintenance. It is a joke to see highly educated people sprouting nonsense.

But then.. i remember that DR itself is on higher grounds coz I walked by the footpath along the canal, the ground level of DR is around my shoulder level.
Dunno how.. must stay to know :p

The most recent flood, newspapers blame Typhoon...But of course, not everybody believes what they read.
if true.... the flood area seems to be expanding.... But what to do.... the drains is expensive.. will take time to build.. got to be realistic lah...
cannot be every where also build flood canals rite ? You want canals or condos ? The ans is obvious rite ! Already got marina barriage to catch all those water and release else lagi more floods.. you guys should be thankful !
As to those photos.. the same photos are being circulated leh.. So may not be fair.. All pt to the same old usual place lah..
Let's not rush to conclusion and pre judge.. Let the relevant authoriities do their job lah.... And sure somewhere along the drains might be more chokes.. SO you must also do yr part.. Dun anyhow throw rubbish...

The Marina barrage is the vision for our water lah.. Without it.. may not have enough clean water to drink leh... Still too early to tell... all the gates open.. the water should flow.. if water no flow out.. means u singaporeans throwing too much rubbish in the drains to choke it ..

good luck Singapore!... Flood Flood Flood at?

More like 1 in 2 I feel if you include the Malaysians.
Last time it was mainly malaysians working here but we don't feel pressured since we are culturally similar.
But nowadays, I go food court, I go shopping mall, half the time I will be served by a foreigner.
Nothing against foreigners. It's more of acclimatizing myself to the new environment. We are in a transient to a global cosmo city.. my PM Lee says.
I would have gone to taiwan or China or Australia to live if not for my aged parents. Why feel like a foreigner in your own country? Might as well be a REAL foreigner in taiwan or China where I can live a moderately luxurious lifestyle. :P
......

Then the residents in Taiwan or China or Australia will say the same thing about you. Some Australian is already resenting immigrants.

Mrt even more scary...always surrounded by foreigners. Really thought I'm in a foreign country. really feel relief or a little sense of home when I saw or heard a singaporean.

True :) But at least I am really a foreigner in a foreign land. Now I am a foreigner in my native land.. :p
Anyway, I know what you mean, I've studied in Australia (Queensland) and some of the current affairs programme debate about foreigners. That's why the govt came up with more strigent rules like ensuring you need to pass your English and think now you have to pass test on Cultural/History of Australia.
aiya.. whether 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 are FTs.. we still majority... still need to set gd examples.. See rubbish.. pick up mah.. else if every drain got choked..

smallant .. you have a very commendable attitude ...
precisely becos singapore is so small ... everything should be mush much easier to tackle .. and yet .. we have just as much problems ..
so do they really deserve 1 mio salary ?
did singapore just earn another world record...the most flooded country? (how about measuring in terms of % flooded area of country land size?) or .... perhaps yet another world record...the most number of fallen trees due to rain!
Hey Proud Owner .... given spore is small.. it is complex leh... 3 times flooding within a span of 1 mth and we do indeed have a lot of excuses of wat could have caused it Typhoons, rubbish choke, tidal, irresponsible rubbish throwers, insufficient capacity etc but no idea of the exact cause of the moving flood.. Seems to me, a lot of previously new unfloodable areas are coming onto the flooding radar. I reckon that tis is worth more than a million dollar problem.. :)
I think we should show more concern on global warming and its effects. Few years down the road, what is known as freak weather now will be much more common, are we ready for that? :2cents:

Singapore, May 30, 2008 - (ACN Newswire) - Singapore will play host to more than 20 international high-level meetings, forums, award ceremonies and workshops on the sidelines of Singapore International Water Week, the global event on water solutions which will be held here from 23 to 27 June 2008.
should have flood that week, ho sey liao cos we got no solution & water leaders around the world will know that we have more than enough water. Anyway even if it's the barrage, no one will admit it, it's our showcase to the world. Barrage is the act of men against the act of God. haha :tsk-tsk: Barrage is good idea, design something wrong?
