Pontiac’s Regent hotel in Cuscaden Rd set to be rebranded Conrad: sources

This will be the second Conrad hotel in Singapore; owners expected to pump in significant investment to renovate the ageing property near Orchard Road.

Pontiac Land Group is expected to appoint Hilton to manage its 440-room Cuscaden Road hotel that currently trades as Regent Singapore. Hilton will operate the hotel under its Conrad brand, sources told The Business Times.

This will be the second Conrad in Singapore, after the Conrad Centennial Singapore, which is also owned by a company in the Pontiac Land stable.

“Hilton will not have any radius restrictions on operating two Conrad hotels in Singapore since they are both owned by the same group,” said an industry observer.

The hotel, at the corner of Cuscaden and Tomlinson roads, will also be the fourth hotel to be managed by Hilton in Singapore. Besides Conrad Centennial Singapore, the other two are Hilton Singapore Orchard (the former Mandarin Orchard Singapore before it underwent a S$150 million revamp) and Hilton Garden Inn Singapore Serangoon along Belilios Road.

Regent Singapore is owned by a company that is 75 per cent held by the Kwee family’s Pontiac Land, with Kajima Corporation owning the remaining 25 per cent.

Market watchers expect the owners to do a significant renovation of the asset, to raise it to the level of the Conrad brand. “There will be some fresh competition coming up in the area from the opening of new hotels such as Artyzen (being developed by Shun Tak) and The Singapore EDITION (being developed by a joint venture that includes City Developments). To remain competitive, the Kwees know they need to do a major revamp of their hotel,” said an industry player.

Analysts also say that having Hilton operate the Cuscaden Road property will allow its owners to leverage on the hotel chain’s strengths in the business travel and MICE segments and increase their exposure to the high-yielding luxe market from the United States.

A consortium led by Pontiac Land developed the hotel on a state land sale site that it bagged in the 1970s.

Designed by John Portman & Associates, the hotel was completed in 1982 and opened as the Pavilion Inter-Continental Singapore. In November 1988, it was renamed Regent Singapore and underwent a major revamp costing more than S$40 million. Hirsch Bedner and Associates was the interior design consultant.

Regent Singapore’s F&B outlets include Basilico (serving Italian cuisine), Dolcetto (Italian pasticceria), Summer Palace (Cantonese cuisine), Park90 (wine bar) and the Manhattan bar. Regent is a brand in the IHG Hotels & Resorts stable.

Visitor arrivals to Singapore in September hit 752,305, up from 728,744 in August, recording eight straight months of growth, according to data from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), BT reported earlier this week. September’s figure represents a new high in the Republic’s post-pandemic recovery, even if it is about half the 1.46 million visitors recorded in September 2019, before Covid-19 hit.
