BY 2018, it should be easier and more convenient to commute in Ang Mo Kio without a car.

On Tuesday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced preliminary plans to transform Ang Mo Kio into a more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly town.

A key proposal is a weather-proof walking and cycling path under the MRT viaduct, south of the Ang Mo Kio MRT station.

There are also plans to create an elevated path along the MRT viaduct for pedestrians and cyclists to bypass the MRT station and avoid street-level crossing for a faster and safer journey.

Other features include bicycle parking, dedicated walking and cycling paths, safer bus stops and road crossings, and better access to the Ang Mo Kio MRT station.

LTA chief executive Chew Men Leong said: "As we continue to expand our public transport infrastructure and move towards a vision of a sustainable and liveable Singapore, we will also complement these efforts by enhancing the travel experience for commuters in the first and final leg of their destinations, be it through walking or cycling."

Plans to pilot Ang Mo Kio as a walking and cycling town were first announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in November this year, as part of the S$1.5 billion Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015, which includes the vision to promote and develop other modes of transport for a "Car-Lite Singapore".

A mature town with few cycling infrastructure and close proximity to several industrial estates and commercial areas were the reasons Ang Mo Kio was chosen as the test-bed project, said LTA and URA in a joint response to BT.

Also targeted for 2018, and the first of its kind in Singapore, are plans to implement a 2.6 kilometre-long corridor along the MRT viaduct between Yio Chu Kang MRT station and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park with elevated paths across roads, to provide a seamless, weather-protected path for pedestrians and cyclists to move between their homes and the MRT stations.

The public will be able to provide feedback for this initiative from Wednesday to Feb 1, 2015, through a dedicated website, www.walkandcycle.sg, and via a roving exhibition, to be held at various locations around Ang Mo Kio.
