SIX local contractors and local joint ventures have snagged all of the nearly $1.4 billion worth of contracts awarded so far for the Thomson Line (TSL). The six contracts - out of 22 major contracts - total $1.361 billion.

They account for 27 per cent of the major civil contracts for the TSL - higher than the nine out of 37 contracts, or 24 per cent, awarded to local players for the Downtown Line.

The $18 billion TSL is Singapore's sixth MRT line and connects northern Singapore to the CBD and Marina Bay area. It will be ready in phases from 2019 to 2021. The 30-kilometre long line will be fully underground with 22 stations, of which six will be interchanges.

During the groundbreaking ceremony at the Woodlands Station project site yesterday, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said that this will bring to 30 the number of interchange stations across the rail network by 2021 - up from 19 today - and strengthen the overall resilience of the rail network.

"This will give commuters more alternative routes on the rail network to their desired destinations and minimise their inconvenience should there be service disruptions," said Mr Lui.

The TSL, which will run roughly parallel to the existing North-South MRT Line, will help to relieve crowding on the latter by providing a projected 60 per cent in additional capacity to the North-South corridor.

"More than 400,000 commuters living and working along the Thomson Line will enjoy greater accessibility, more travel options and shorter, more direct journeys to their destinations," said the minister.

He said that the Thomson Line is part of the government's efforts "to improve the capacity and service levels of our rail network as quickly as we can".

He added: "Over the next three years, Singaporeans will continue to see new lines and extensions opening, as we continue at an unprecedented pace of rail building."

Mr Lui was referring to the West Loop of the Punggol LRT to be opened tomorrow, the North-South Line Extension to open later this year, the Tuas West Extension in 2016, and the fully opened 42 km Downtown Line in 2017. With these, Singapore's rail network will expand by 25 per cent by 2017.

Mr Lui also revealed that an additional station, called Canberra station, will be built between Yishun and Sembawang on the North-South Line.
