As part of an initiative to realise Singapore’s ‘city in a garden’ idea, the National Parks Board (NParks) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) launched a project titled ‘Skyrise Greenery’ in the mid-2000s to increase green spaces in our increasingly concrete landscape. While many of the rooftop gardens at malls across town are relatively well-known, such as at VivoCity or Orchard Central, there are also less flashy ones – the ones at the top of several HDB multi-story car parks.

Admittedly, there’s not too much to see, but the ones at Punggol or Commonwealth are worth a look if you’re in the area. The former has a few picnic benches, while the latter boasts fitness facilities, ample benches and a view of the MRT track and pavements below. Most of these gardens are only accesible by the car parks’ staircases, but the one in Commonwealth can be reached by a lift opposite the Kopitiam facing the Commonwealth Station bus stop. Other HDB car park roof gardens can be found at Sengkang and Dover. Punggol Blk 180 Edgefield Plains (PL16). Commonwealth Blk 88 Tanglin Halt Rd (330KB).
