In an effort to allow commuters to better plan their journeys, Ang Mo Kio and Tanjong Pagar MRT stations are installing a set of traffic lights that signal to commuters how crowded the platforms are before they go through the fare gates and onto the platform.

The new signals will indicate green, yellow or red, similar to current traffic lights.

Green will mean that the platform is not very crowded and passengers should be able to board a train straight away.

Yellow means there is a small crowd on the platform and commuters can expect to wait 2 or 3 trains before they will have room to board.

Red will mean that the platform is extremely crowded and commuters should expect delays on their journey and may wish to take alternate transport options.

The signals will allow people to make alternate travel arrangements before having to go to the platform which may help to reduce congestion on the platforms themselves.

They are also very simple to understand and can also be used to signal that there are train faults, breakdowns or long delays as the signal will flash.

It seems that instead of trying to improve their reliability, SMRT wants to invest in "traffic lights" for public transport passengers.

It really is a sad day when Singapore is so crowded that even pedestrians and passengers on public transport need "traffic lights" to help reduce congestion on MRT platforms.

The new signalling system will run on a 6 month trial at these two stations.

What a joke!
If they are willing to increase train frequency to 1 min per train, there is no need for traffic light in MRT stations! Simply waste of tax payers' money!

What happen if there is no alternate transport options for the passengers or the passengers have to transfer a few buses before they reach their destination. I have always been wondering why my colleague comes to work so late. Official office hours is 9am but she always came at 9.30am. Now worst came to work at 10am, my boss so good, never make noise.:hornybastard:

Actually, instead of installing the traffic light, they can install a TV to show the crowd in the platform.:2cents: This will also help the commuters to decide whether to take the train or not if they have an alternate transport options.

I feel they should divide SMRT train to three classes.

Raffles Class - Numbered Seats (1 train segments)
Business Class - Free Sittings (2 train segments)
Economy Class - No seats, only standing. (3 train segments)

The traffic lights makes sense only when there is a closed loop. That is if the traffic light turns red, the extra bus services are alerted and will immediately respond to divert the heavy passenger traffic away from the MRT station.

Otherwise, it just seems to be saying " MRT station is crowded. Can't you see the traffic light is red. Stop boarding the MRT. Go figure how you go to work yourself "

t-loan those old red flashing lights with sirens and stick on top of control station rooms cheaper, no need waste more money installing such gadgets which will result in further price increases :scared-3: ...

Free for 1 year trial for taking MRT at certain time at certain stations, then increase the public transport later on. Free - benefit a small group of people, increase - affect majority of them who need to take public transport.
