SINGAPORE: It's less than a week to the Lunar New Year and the Chinatown Business Association said its annual new year bazaar has seen better business compared to the last two years.
This is thanks to the recent cool weather in Singapore and the opening of the Downtown Line but not all shops in Chinatown are seeing an improvement in business.

Foana Fong, sales manager at Tong Heng Confectionery said: "Christmas and the Lunar New Year are around the same time, so people might consider before spending. There are also more shops in the heartlands, many customers buy their goodies there and then come to Chinatown for a walk."

Businesses also noted there are now more places apart from Chinatown to soak in the festive atmosphere and this has drawn some customers away.

Some have decided to up the ante with more lavishly designed new year goodies.

The price of festive favourites has also gone up by about 10 per cent this year.
Some shops say besides the rising cost of ingredients, they've also had to raise salaries as it's difficult to hire workers.
