SINGAPORE: Singapore's first community museum celebrated its first anniversary on Saturday evening.
More than 24,000 people have visited the museum at Taman Jurong since it opened its doors a year ago.
Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said: "We have people from all backgrounds. Residents - most are not artists, they're not people with an arts background, but they've decided to take part in activities together and to create something new and special. This is a very good example of how we can do things on our own in the community with the support of the government."
The museum has also introduced new exhibits, with a greater focus on the Taman Jurong neighbourhood.
They were put together by various schools and social groups from the Jurong community, along with the National Heritage Board.
The museum said this has provided participants a platform to showcase their talent while learning more about the heritage of the neighbourhood.
Going forward, the museum hopes to get even more from the community on board.
The National Heritage Board (NHB) said it is open to having more community museums in Singapore. A new one is in the works in Tampines.
NHB said it has to take the "community" part of the museum very seriously.
Tan Boon Hui, group director of programmes at NHB, said: "The community has to want and be ready to produce this because it is their museum. We're taking it very slowly, through our various activities like our travelling exhibitions, our heritage corners, our trails, they are ways for us to activate the communities across Singapore and have that sort of ground sensing to see where people are interested in heritage activities or building a node for heritage.”
