Singapore’s social housing dates back nearly 50 years and has a become monument to the country’s rapid development – about 85% of the population live in social housing.
Tour guide Huang Eu Chai explained that in the early 1960s housing shortages were close to becoming an emergency: "People literally lived almost on the streets or literally living in cages in some of these old shop houses."
He said it is important for people to see these neighbourhoods: “It is part of our reality.”
