The Singaporean couple were refuelling their car near the Plaza Pelangi shopping mall in Johor Baru for the trip home at about 11.15pm on Saturday.
But the Lims were suddenly approached by two men in their 30s, one of whom had a knife. They said Mr Lim owed them RM65,000 (S$25,600) and recognised him through his vehicle’s licence plate number.
The couple had travelled to Johor Baru more than 40 times in the past two years and had never encountered anyone making such a claim.
Fearing for their safety, Mr Lim sped off towards the immigration checkpoint. The two men caught up with the couple in their white lorry.
Then followed four nerve-racking hours driving around the city from one ATM to another to draw money to pay the men.
The two men took off with RM6,000 and the couple's mobile phones.

I used to go to JB when I was in Uni.
During the weekends, a group of us will take turns to drive down there.
It was different last time.
I felt safe at that time.
Nowadays I don't even feel safe when I go to KL.
I only go to Malaysia when it is extremely necessary, ie to attend to family matters.
It is such a pity.
It is a beautiful country with delicious food.

After u successfully run them over... Then what? U probably will get into expensive legal problem. The robbers will play innocent motorists. It will take more time and money to settle the problem. U can't win.

But they are kinder to students.
Eg if you have only $10, they will take $9 so that you will have $1 to take bus home.

No choice . Just give them everything in wallet. Luckily got friends there. It was an unforgettable experience man.
You can also act as innocent driver who met an accident only. It is just their words against your words, and why would a tourist in their country want to run down somebody they don't even know for no reason???.. :scared-2:

That was exactly why my parents packed up and left JB for SG. This happens to locals too.
But it is easier to target Singaporean.
And it is hard for Singaporean to blend in because of the accent.
Do not fight back. Its not worth it.
If you get involve with the locals, next to deal with is the police. That's a whole different story.
It's either you are lucky or unlucky. But 1 time is enough to make it a bad experience.
That why the people going to JB will have a reality check. all this BS abt moving to JB is Cheap. its Cheap for a reason.

The more you are easily terrorised, the more they will want to terrorise you. It will show up in your composure that you are an easy target. If you are easily terrorised and afraid of the thieves there, don't go overseas or only travel in big tour groups. Or else stay in Singapore is the safest option. That's all I have to say about this.

Let's say u can successfully run then over and get away with it. The robbers are not that dumb. They will use different and probably more violent tactics. They will disable the vehicle first before they rob you. I live in a country where if my car get hit by other vehicle, I wouldn't bother to go down and check. I just drive off and let the insurance handle it. To a certain degree it changes the robbers behaviour, knowing that the driver doesn't care if the car is damaged. So. We have less chance to be victimised. So better just drive off, if not possible just give money. If you play rambo, they next victims could be worse off by the changing tactic of the robbers.

actually i shared this before... asked my jb colleague why sometimes there is violence even when victims comply with robbers' demand. she said the robbers are able to differentiate singaporeans from locals and are also kiasi, so may whack victims first before robbing them. seems like best strategy is to run if possible.

Singaporeans often forgot the value of "social engineering" effort done by the gov. It take decades to achieve it and tremendeus effort to maintain it. But money doesn't lie. That why u pay more in sg.

Actually acting lunatic is really work. At one time I was in king cross sydney late at night. There was a bunch of drunken aboriginies shouting "f*cking asians" at us. My friends just pretend to walk like invalid and talking loudly to himself. They were more afraid at us than we were at them.

actually u can juz get rob anywhere la, even in sg.
a few yrs back I was almost "robbed".
it was abt 8-9+ in the nite and I was walking past some hdb flats den suddenly I felt a tug on my bag (btw, it was only a casual denim bag ok, not even leather or branded). I was quite shocked & "ahh" in natural reaction. perhaps the robbers (young malay guys) were 1st timer, they were even more shocked I supposed :p let go of my bag & ran away ...
my neighbourhood is not exactly isolated & I dun wear jewellery at all, not even watch ok, yet Im being targeted.
