Redas president position up in the air

Possible for outgoing head Chia Boon Kuah to be candidate

By ong chor hao [email protected]

THE Real Estate Developers' Association of Singapore's (Redas's) current president, Chia Boon Kuah, will have to relinquish his post when he leaves Far East Organization next year.

But it does not mean that the new president will be from Far East; it may not even be out of the question that Mr Chia can be president again.

This is tied to how office holders are elected at Redas.

Every two years, the industry body elects 15 members and can co-opt up to five more to its management committee, according to its constitution. This committee will elect the various office holders from among themselves, for roles such as first and second vice-president and honorary secretary.

Last year, Mr Chia was elected president.

But because the membership of the management committee is tied to the company and not the individual, Mr Chia, who is chief operating officer at Far East but will join Guocoland next year, has to resign as Redas president come his last day at Far East. The management committee can then appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term.

Far East will nominate a new representative to the management committee to replace Mr Chia; it has not been decided who this person will be. But the representative will not automatically become the next president of Redas, as each office holder has to be elected by the management committee.

It may even be possible in theory for Mr Chia to replace himself, since Guocoland is one of the management committee members for 2013/2014. In the event that Mr Chia is nominated as Guocoland's representative on the management committee before the new president is elected, he will be eligible as a candidate.

Mr Chia will not be the first Redas president to have resigned during his term. Former Member of Parliament Heng Chiang Meng (then with Far East) did so in December 1997. He was replaced by Daniel Teo of Hong How Group and Tong Eng Group fame.
