Just wondering where do most of you plan to stay after retirement? Stay in your condo with rental income, or HDB , if so in what size, studio for elderly or bigger? or do u plan to retire in a mm unit, or if fortunate, in a landed? or do u think u might retire overseas, if so in which country?

i believe retirement planning is important and hope to find out more about where my peers plan to retire in.

please contribute yr ideas...

Plan to retire in Singapore. Condo 1800 sq ft (not too small, not too big). Easy to upkeep without a live-in maid (may not be readily available by that time). No need to worry about the garden or hiring gardeners (also becoming an endangered species). Can lock it up and travel out of Singapore for weeks or months at a time.

Wow sis 1800sq ft is big leh, esp if there are only 2 left in the home.
I also plan to stay in SG.
I hope to stay in a 2 +1 bedder somewhere in the east, near amenities.

Good for you! To be able to do that , you must have a lot of savings or passive income. Read of a few cases in salary.sg of people who stay in condo or landed having to downgrade to hdb for their retirement. Even the elderly lady who sold her terrace to me downgraded to a hdb. Congrats on your successful financial planning!

In a condo too? If I do retire in Singapore, prob will do so in my mm unit but hubby wants a bigger space, hopefully , if price falls in future, can do so.

I think many might be thinking of retiring in a hdb flat but feel embarrassed to say it in an open forum. There are many hdb millionaire retirees so there is no need to feel shy. I sometimes feel maybe it is a wise choice too, cheaper and save on mthly maintenance.

If people can afford, probably not HDB because:
-Estate maintenance problems
-hygiene problems
-pest control problems
-security problems
-If you have a car, maintenance not really cheap anymore.

Plan to retire in a 2 br condo, about 700 sq ft, reasonably good location and near mrt so no need to drive. Nice to be near big garden or park. Can't really stay in a mm. Rent out my current condo for passive income.

I plan to retire in a HDB studio or HDB new 2 bedder. Pungool looks like a good place for fishing. I will park my Yatcht at the seafood retuarant there and my new Bentley in the HDB multi-storey carpark . I will employ a Cisco guard to guard at my HDB corridor and my driver will guard my Bentley in the carpark.

Good Luck:)

Sis you are making me feel regretful that I didn't buy the 2-bedder at Archipelago. Only bought the MM there. At the time, I didn't expect so many CMs to come along after that.

interesting thread.... i definitely opt to retire in a minimum 2-bedder in the east, spend quality time with wifey like travelling, go for enrichment classes, drive around for nice food and spend more time with children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren...

no pun intended... the last i want is to be alone, single, narrow-minded, 4 walls with only a war screen and keyboard to match :D hahaha

how to retire by staying in landed ?

You've got to take out few hundred monthly to trim the grass and wash the pond away from algae

There is a local hospital. But for best medical treatment better fly back to sg through batam or Jakarta.

I retired 3 years back and sharing my experience.

We wanted to retire in Penang, but could not go ahead as need to support the aged parents here. Also, there is short of good seafood and fruits there.

I love the my retirement home. There are many considerations in choosing one.
1. cannot have staircase, leg / knee problems when you are old
2. near to the market, supermarket, marketing is about 3 times a week
3. conveniently located with lots of buses...I don't see the real need of MRT
4. Need not be too big, otherwise slave to the house.
5. if there are two only, 1000 sf will be ideal. But if you are staying with aged parents or grandchildren, need bigger size.
6. Must be a condo, with good space, garden and pool. This is life style you wish to have
7. at the East, walking to the ECP, better air and lots of good food around

In fact, I spent much more after retiring, much more on the life style.

Actually, why are so many people pessimistic about retiring? Are your living expenses really so high that you have to drastically down grade your home? Once the home is paid up, the kids have finished tertiary education, you stop work, you don't need 2 cars or even 1 car if near the MRT. You can also send the maid home if there are no kids/grandkids staying in. If kids/grandkids stay, you should charge them a share of the household bills (utilities/maid etc). You will have more time to do your own cooking/baking (home cooked food healthier than eating out). Holidays - when you are older, the expensive holidays will be out of your league, you can no longer go skiing or anything over-adventurous.

I totally agreed with you!

but not many ppl can stay so near and walk to ECP :D

One of the biggest impediments to building our retirement fund is the high cost of owning a car in Singapore. If you have to put down a hefty deposit for a car in your early 30s, that's money that could have gone into investments. The car is a depreciating asset so you gain nothing long term from owning it. :simmering:

Move in to Penthouse unit in Sengkang in 2 yrs time when TOP. Hope to retire in 10yrs time with all properties fully paid.

Move to 2bedder in Pasir Ris at 65yrs old or when 2kids have their own nests.

Passive income from HDB, Penthouse and industrial units. Hope to be healthy enough to be able to travel frequently. Not much holiday for now, got work hard to pay for the properties.

May my plan comes true earlier. :):santana::santana:

by then maybe (hopefully) our train system will be better and i can go to places by train. even visit friends or relatives at iskandar area by train (if place takes off in big way and more people retire there as some forummers here predicted).

i still prefer staying at singapore :)
