Living the good life no longer requires a central address with the opening of JEM

BY
ZHANG WEIFANG

In the old days, people would pooh-pooh the idea of heading out to the western - and more industrial - end of Singapore for a day out - unless you were going to the Jurong Bird Park. But these days, the west is where you want to be, what with cool condos and marvellous malls all taking root there.

And, as these pictures testify, things can get pretty good-looking out there.

Paradigm is shifting. Jurong Lake District will link up with Nusajaya (15 min by car via AYE). This stretch will form the corridor of wealth: residential, commercial, recreational, manufacturing and financial.

Not for me, jurong is not my cup of tea. Still prefer the central n the east.
Maybe it's the mindset, I m not too sure.
To each its own.. :cheers6:

I'm not going to say more but West has always been the centre for most Singaporeans: all universities were situated there. Unless your dad is rich to send you overseas or you gotten an overseas scholarship, most graduate Singaporeans have to spend at least 3 years of their life there...

As I drive to Jurong Gateway for shopping and dining at JEM, I am beginning to see the transformation taking shape.

The URA has earmarked Jurong Gateway as the next biggest commercial hub outside of CBD with commercial offices, retail malls, hotels, entertainment, hospitals and residences. The Jurong Gateway is well served by the integrated transport hub comprising of the E-W and N-S MRT lines and the integrated Bus Interchange. Closely linked to the commercial hub will be the leisure precinct south of the Jurong Gateway - the water-themed park development around the Lake.

All these developments are shaping up nicely and creating a new vibrancy and excitement in the Jurong Gateway and Lakeside District.

March onwards, Towards the Future

Jurong Lake District

JLD is one of the new Growth Areas identified in URA’s Master Plan 2008 to support Singapore’s economic growth for the next 10 to 15 years, and to decentralise commercial activities out of the city centre by bringing jobs closer to where people live. It will be the largest commercial and regional centre outside the Central Business District (CBD). Surrounding JLD is a resident population of over 1 million and the largest concentration of industrial space in Singapore.
The vision is for JLD to be a leading model for Singapore in developing a mixed-used urban precinct that is:

Sustainable: meeting the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; where new developments are built sensitively reducing their environmental impact, resources are utilised efficiently, carbon footprint is reduced, and vitality and resilience of local communities and businesses are enhanced; and
Smart and Connected: where pervasive ICT connectivity and real-time large data collection will lead to greater awareness and insights, translating into improved liveability for residents, and more efficient operations and informed planning for agencies and organisations.

The Info-communications Development Authority of Singapore ("IDA") is issuing this Call-for-Collaboration ("CFC") to invite participants to submit proposals (“Proposals”) to pilot and trial cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions in Jurong Lake District (“JLD”), with the aim of developing a smart, connected and sustainable district.

Objectives

The CFC allows the Government and industry to collaborate and conduct pilots and trials of smart technologies in JLD. The CFC:

Provides the industry with a platform to demonstrate their solutions in addressing urban challenges, especially those of cross-domain nature; and
Offers Government agencies an opportunity to test out innovative solutions before deploying them nation-wide.By focusing the industry and Government’s efforts in JLD, the CFC will also create a collection of tried and tested solutions to showcase Singapore’s capabilities in smart city technology. The solutions of the CFC will be considered for full-scale whole-of-government synergistic deployment of smart cities in Singapore.

Test-Bed

This CFC invites participants (ICT and non-ICT companies, end-user business enterprises, trade associations, Institutes of Higher Learning, non-profit organisations and more) to propose pilots and trials (otherwise known as “Test Cases”) of cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions in JLD.
Proposals submitted for this CFC must propose Test Cases that are to be implemented within JLD and achieve one or more of the following:

Bring “Smart-ness” to JLD through:
The adoption of cutting-edge technology
Innovation - amongst the first of its kind (in the world, Asia, etc)
Cross-agency collaboration to achieve greater insights
Impact government agencies through:

Better decision-making
Cost savings
Productivity and business process optimisation
Impact the community through:

Quality of life
Increased convenience
Demonstrate “Connected-ness” through:

Leverage of Test-Bed components
While some Test Cases have been pre-defined by Government agencies, participants can also propose other Test Cases that satisfy one of the above for consideration.
