View Full Version : Desperate measures (Divorce wife and declare bankrupt) just to own a condo

Just a couple of months ago, there were news of high divorce rates in China so as to reduce taxes on their properties.

In Singapore, there is one who came up with the idea of divorcing his wife so that he could buy a 2 bedder condo at Trizon. Let's not discuss about how to fit 9 pax in this unit for the moment.

Is this society moving in the right direction?
What kind of man would do such things?
He is an university graduate (means he is a thinker).
Did our schools instil the wrong mindset in him?
Did he spot a loophole that we should be worried about? Should we notify the authorities and banks?

The China report was very funny. It turned out that some of the rich men wanted to divorce their wives and knew that the proposal would meet with resistance, so the measures meant that their wives would now willingly divorce them.

It is not difficult to check for this person as he is planning to house all of them together. Legally, that's not very doable if they are divorced.

Of course there still are loopholes - there always will be.

But look at it this way - if he really is the type to do it, he would have done some of it a long time ago. The situation as it is, discuss and talk and seek advice till the cows come home but no action, tells you that he will continue to think 10,000 times before he does anything. I have many friends who are like that.

Five years later, or twenty years later, it will still be status quo - trust me on that.

if your marriage can even withstand a government policy, good luck - time to look for love in the right places.

can't imagine if a real crisis hits, what happens? kiss goodbye?

If gov say you need to get marry than can get BTO and you get marry does it mean it is not legal. Same goes to if the gov say if you are divorce you pay less tax than you divorce you pay less tax is this legal.

End of the day is, what do the gov want, just do it NIKE......

I believe as many as one third to half of all childless marriages will end up in divorce in 5 years if a serious recession hits Singapore. Those with children will still hang on for a few more years.

B4 I was married, when i try go dating w/o car, on bus and MRT, do you know how difficult it was?

I don't think its about the car, but lack of money.

In life, career and wealth can hardly be guaranteed. Even millionaires can go to a casino and come out a pauper.

I agree. Some of us are emotionaly scarred for life because we have to date on a bus.

Not really, but it is an eye opener. At least I got a wife who doesn't car about that.

1. Rent out three hdbs (at least 6-8k)

2. Find a suitable place to rent at your desired location (think can get even 4 bedroom apartments).

No need divorce, no need to squeeze. Whichever Pri school also can try.

Everybody happy. Go for it.

I already know of people doing that 20 years ago.
Couple is still together... no difference.
Marriage is, after all, a piece of paper.

Having said that, marriage 20 years ago were built to last.

Got me thinking, if don't intend to have kids (or already stopped having kids)
What is the downside of getting a divorce?

If you trivialize the institution of marriage, it might affect your spouse attitude towards it. The consequences might come many years later.

Other than that, one minor consequence is your status is divorced.

it boils down to personal values. personally, never ever treat marriage as a mere piece of paper. the marriage vows, exchanged, are for life and binding.

if a person treat these vows as a mere piece of paper or commodity that can be negated for monies, then i question his/her integrity and ability to hold onto personal convictions in times of difficulty.

if the person is my boss, no respect. if the person is my surbordinate, time to fire or park in cold storage.

how about the richies in keeping up with appearances?
open secret that a lot of rich guys have mistresses and a lot of rich women have toy boys.
yet they are still married together to keep up appearances, attend social functions together etc.
so in your opinion, are they still keeping their marriage vows and do you still respect them for keeping their marriage vows?

sorry, keeping up with appearances while fooling around, violates the spirit and essence of their marriage vows.

so let me figure out
1) those still married yet fool around = no respect
2) those divorced (for reasons like getting 2 properties yet still love each other) = no respect
3) those still married and still love each other = respect

yup, though i believe the permutations aren't exhaustive. let me reiterate, it all boils down to personal values.

in case 2, i doubt there is convicted love. reason being, convictions don't give way to conveniences.

Married couples in Singapore have been faking their divorce in order to buy new flats to be rented. The flats rentals typically earn them an extra $2,000 to $3,000 a month.

Vice-president of real estate company Propnex, Mr Lim Yong Hock, told Lianhe Wanbao that such practices began about 10 years ago.

Property agents have been puzzled when couples show up to view a house together, despite being divorced.

After the couples proceed with the divorce, one party will keep the existing flat which they co-own, and the other party would buy another flat. One of the flats will then be rented.

According to Singapore's regulations, a single person above the age of 35 is eligible to own a flat on their own.

Mr Lim added that such arrangements between couples are hard to see through and even harder to foil.

In an earlier report last year by China Daily, couples in Shanghai had also faked their divorce and obtained fake divorce certificates to buy properties after the legislation passed a regulation which only allowed families to purchase only one apartment.
