Public transport infrastructure has been steadily crumbling all these years under some flawed models. Get ready for massive injection of tax payers' money and higher fares in the next few years. Public transportation could be just the tip of the ice-berg.

Public transport fare increases in Singapore over the last few years have been lower than cities such as Hong Kong, London and New York, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew.

Responding to questions from MPs on transport fare hikes over the past few years, Mr Lui told the House that fares here are generally comparable and typically lower than those cities mentioned.

He said: "The Government is fully committed to keeping public transport fares affordable. Indeed, we want to carefully study this issue in greater detail for different income levels and various special groups that may be more vulnerable and will need special help should fares have to be raised."

Mr Lui said public transport fares have been adjusted in small amounts seven times from 2003 to 2012 by the Public Transport Council (PTC).

Goodness , the same old comparison and same old strokes.

Why not compared with countries which provide lower fees?

Wher did I say to compare with backward countries?
Not only they want to use high cost of certain countries to justify fare increase , and let be specific on this, is there any benefit?

Instead of increase the fare, they should look at the operation model first to optimize before turning the tap for a quick fix solution .

That something they got to fix it. Primary the ridership increase over the years, not need to further say why, and still can not make enough profit?

Unless u work in the bus company, u are in no position to say they dont care.

Route planning is not simple maths 1+1=2

If all other factors remain the same, but ridership increase, of course profit goes up. But they dont. Fuel, salary, are up.

The previous hike had considered fuel price when it hit about 120pb. And they had switch to use china driver 2-3 years ago replacing majority of singaporean and Malaysian drivers with china driver command much much lower salaries .

So the factors not same?

These drivers also have annual increment. How about cost of maintenace? Cost of replacement parts?

I think the contention there is not profit or loss but rather profit to xx percentile . .

Who don know there are operation cost and cost is going north?
