Dragon fish is for wealth while Koi represent health and peace..
My friend spend hundreds just the ask the fish shop to give a proper ' burial ' for his beloved dragon fish ..

my 4rm flat once had a 6 feet tank with a RTG arrowana..the most beautiful fish i ever had...i bought at 10inches and had to sell off at 18inches when i shifted to condo...very sayang...but when i move to my buc condo i want to try koi...:spliff:
It's always sad to see the fish die. It happened to me before where whole pond of koi died when I went for a few weeks holiday even though I did ask someone to look after them while I'm away.
Somebody told me that Chinese believe that when your fishes die, they are actually helping you to 挡灾。Coincidentally, I fall sick during that holiday trip. So if you ask me whether it's superstitious, I still chose to believe it.

I've never kept arowana before as I don't like to feed live food to the fishes I kept. You must have felt the pain in the heart when you sold it as you're force to do it due to the move.

Prob you had some germs in your hand when you fed your fish before you left for your trip, then your fish died but the left-over germs in your hands were only strong enough to make you ill and not kill you off. So I think you are right because if you might not survive if your fish didn't take some of the germs from you :D
