seriously speaking, i think koh is a good guy and his talents are best fulfilled as a collorectal surgeon. It is easy to find someone to sit in parliament, but it is extremely difficult to find a good collorectal surgeon. Since we face a shortage of medical specialists in singapore, i think the people of punggol east have made the decision to send him back to the medical profession :D

Hmm...people are still dissatisfied with the ruling party. Mid year exam failed again.

Could have held by-election after budget announcement...means this year's budget originally got no goodies?? Or maybe after losing this by-election, change plans and throw in more goodies...?

i think PAP(HDB) must rethink their strategy .. how to control and maintain the run away prices of new HDB ..work on how to help the real needy buy their first HDB ..

HDB flats are cheap compared to PC ... but to many who never dream of living in PC ...the new HDB is considered very expensive ....

Punggol East residents largely young and middle class..eventually aspire to own PCs. So, HDB not a big issue. I think it is a deep seated desire to continue to keep a check on the govt.

The more the government tries to change and please, the more people feel that having greater opposition in parliament is working. It's a no win situation really...

So, if govt does well, people will feel that opposition is having the desired effect. Tough for PAP going ahead...

I have no issue with 7mil, we need the population to maintain growth and demographics... But they better make sure that the infrastructure is ready or even over-ready for the 7mil... If they learnt their lesson at all.

They have been lagging behind demand in the past, hence the complaints... It's time they go ahead of demand...

I have issue with the 7 mil, because the bulk of it is driven by new citizens, PRs and immigrants. I'm not sure where the profits of our national investments go. It could have been better utilized to support early childcare. This is in the midst of overcrowding and major breakdowns in infrastructure. The timing and way of increasing pop are wrong.

I see it as a necessary evil to maintain the population mix, certain communities are not growing as fast as others, if left unchecked and unbalanced... The balance of power would shift... Enough said...

Having said the above, it's how to make plan the infrastructure to prevent "overcrowding and major breakdowns"...

The key issue is high inflation in car, housing, maid, baby and childcare are denying middle class basic quality of life

In Beijing, they have car balloting system, in Sg high Coe is seen as unfair to middle class

Are pappies so sure that this election loss is due to high pty prices? It is very hard to pinpoint the reason for their loss unless a survey carried out on the voters. IMO if they are going to have more CMs, they would be overdoing it and people may end up turning against them. They have to thread with caution coz majority of singaporeans have majority of their money tied up in property, so causing prices to fall would not do the PAP any good.

I know a PR family who intend to move their son back to india before reaching NS age, so much for loyalty and being grateful. I think singapore should have a law saying that if a PR child receives a certain number of years of subsidised education, they cannot opt out of NS.

i mentioned before, back in JC many years back, 2 of my PR classmates dropped their PR after JC2. so this is really not new. but perhaps, more prevalent now. due to the huge increase in immigrants.

My view - NS is good for Singapore young men. And NS gave me the opportunity to interact with people from different educational backgrounds.

Also, some of the best friendships are formed from NS days.

My group of NS friends still meet 2 to 3 times (mainly makan sessions) a year for the past 15 years.

Not sure about choice
In Singapore, National Service is a Conscription

During our time (70') we were very proud to serve our Country
we do our exercise and run to built up our physics and stamina before we were even enlisted.
To this day, I share vividly about my NS experiences with my sons and about the camaraderie spirit back then

Occassionally a group of us still gather for simple dinner and mahjong sessions....Friendship for LIFE

BUT

recently, there is another side of the story to serving in the National Service

This has to do with the "Open Door" policies from our Government.

Nonetheless, I still believe our youngsters today take pride in our Country afterall their family and friends are all here.

(To empathise with the the youngster today, I recalled that during the Vietnam War, many marines were asking themselves : Who am I fighting and sacrificing for ?)

Many were asking the same question today
They are now confused

do we really need 2 years for that experience? I remember most of the time idling in camp after going through the essential training. there were days when we had no exercise and everyone in the camp was just waiting to book out. in my camp nobody enjoyed eating cookhouse food n I remembered the sergeant just allowing us to eat at the canteen. when I was on duty one day, I remembered throwing bags n bags of cooked chicken drumsticksn rice because nobody bothered to eat the lousily cooked food. I learnt that the military is a terribly wasteful organisation in my time there. during exercise days, they would indent truckloads of food to be dumped into trash bags, each time I saw ppl throwing that food away by the bags, I think of those starving in other parts of the world.
