1. Creating job opportunities

For agents, lawyers, IDs, upholsters, furniture companies, contractors, painters, plumbers, landscapers, pool maintenance companies, security and alarm, lighting companies, floor experts, grille experts, peep hole experts, electricians, white goods and electronics dealers, utilities, phone and internet companies, aircon maintenance companies, movers, caterers... and many many more.

2. Giving people a place called home

When they cant afford to buy. This is a life saver for them to continue enjoying the same quality of life.

3. Reduce the homeless population

By giving people an entire unit, room, or even just bed space, we let strangers into our houses and risk all kinds. So that they dont end up sleeping on the streets and bus stops and park benches or cause more societal problems or crime.

4. Help the government to grow

By paying our fair share of taxes and stamp duties.

5. Help the general public enjoy better infrastructure

By virtue of the additional taxes we pay, in part contributing to nation building.

6. Help reduce strays and abandonment

By allowing tenants to keep their dogs cats turtle fishes hamster guinea pigs ferrets snakes etc etc

7. Encourage diversity and integration

By taking in FT tenants. Especially for HDB and mass market landlords.

8. Reduce greenhouse emissions

Most tenants dont drive.

9. Contribute to and utilize our public transport system

See 8. above.

10. Encourage participation in other wealth creation sectors

Since their money isnt tied up in properties, tenants are free to invest in stocks shares startups bonds reits businesses etc etc. They also are more able to go on holidays again contributing to the tourism and hospitality sector.

So BEING A LANDLORD should be the new Singaporean dream of all children as there is no other occupation more noble with far reaching benefits to society.

Wow, carbuncle.
I did not know that there are so many functions of a landlord until you mention them.
It is so noble!
I like Point 6 especially - about the pets.

sis butter. i think too many people take landlords for granted. like bankers, most do not realise they and the society need them and brand them as evil.

sis butter. i think too many people take landlords for granted. like bankers, most do not realise they and the society need them and brand them as evil.

People tend to regard them as evil as they extract money.
But they are human and need money to survive.
People tend to think that those who render their services FOC are kind.

You forgot to mention that landlord & tenant together also keep the banking sector going (e.g. via loan repayment) and hence the whole country's economy going. lol

These are qualitative.
You havent mention the real dollars and cents we contribute to make Singapore a better place to live in....

Buy that time --> Pay Stamp Duty, some even pay ABSD for 3rd property
Get keys that time ---> Pay GST on every damn thing we buy; furniture, utilities, curtains, lightings, white goods, and lotsa lotsa other items if fully furnished..
Rental out that time --> Pay Income Tax on rental income
Every month/year --> Pay 10% of AV of property tax...

Which other industry or SME, pay so many categories of taxes in one single transaction ?

3 cheers to the landlords ... Heeep Heeep Hurray!

But despite all these hardships, we continue to serve our country and undertake the risk of our properties crashing 50% by 2015 !
