i am lucky to live in kampung while i am still a little kid before govt force my family to move to HDB ..

The HDB is where i have been living around for nearly 30yr now.. :(

the soil, the hungry mosquito during the night, the well to collect water, the home grown vege & misc stuffs..
the spacious frontyard..

the noise of the insects when i sleep at night.. :( (those staying landed should still hear it during the night, i guess)

Who remember the very big "Knife Brand Cooking Oil" neon sign board on top of an old building at the circle of the present Nicoll highway - Mountbatten road - guillemard road junction?

And Nicoll highway has a middle carriage way which run in opposite direction in the morn and evening

Seletar in the 70s is kampong living, at night can be very smelly from the nearby pig farms. Sometimes the smell is so bad that I had to close the windows to sleep. The roti prata in Jalan Kayu is addictive, every friday I would cycle there to ta-pao prata, mutton curry and chicken curry home.

I cycle a lot during those times, many weekends me and some friends will cycle around seletar camp to the dam divding lower seletar reservoir and the sea for fishing and camping overnight. That spot was also a lovers haunt. At night there will be cars parked facing the reservoir with lights off and couples doing hanky panky. Couples that came in motorbikes would do their hanky panky in the bushes or some more openly by the sea. We inadvertently see some free shows, unfortunately camera phones was not invented yet so cannot video...

Yes, there would be a car stand along new upper Changi roads where drivers could pick up strangers just to add up to 4 pax per car to enter the CBD for free. And these ppl get to commute to work for free!

Whenever my dad wanted to enter the CBD to run some errands, he would get my mum, my bro and myself along .. And my mum would make us kids stand or kneel on the car seat so that we would be more 'visible' to the officer/inspector

Then later shifted to a rented 2 room HDB flat (about $30+ per month), started my Pr school education there and the canteen food was only $0.30 for a bowl of noodles.

Even the Malaysia Cup..with the likes of Dollah Kassim, Quah Kim Song, Samad Alapitchay.. I used to be glued to the radio for the live broadcast before they had live telecast. There is just so much of the Singapore spirit in them.

2nd Chance was doing so well then until the press go and interview the boss and piciak the lobang... Most ppl then had the impression that it was an ang moh brand (with ang mo kids model), but disappointed to find out later that its actually a local brand. Think the retail business started to decline rapidly thereafter

I loved collecting a lot of the MASK!!!! still have some lol

I vaguely remember there was a MPH even before the ToysRUs started, right?
I remember sitting there and reading Nancy Drew and Dana Girls while my mother shopped.

Also had fond memories of the old Marine Parade Library which was at the present NTUC supermarket site.

And also the ikea katong and the seaview hotel ................

Ya i vaguely remember Ikea was on 2nd floor while Yaohan was on the ground floor, right?

NTUC was occupying the row of shops opposite the library, before it shifted to the library building itself.

Just noticed that in this thread, the easterners seem to hold fond memories of their past.

I loved collecting a lot of the MASK!!!! still have some lol

^5! I also keep some of mine .. . based on memory, these are the ones i had:

- Thunderhawk (red car - seems like every boys will own one)
- Rhino (red truck)
- Raven (black car)
- Gator (orange jeep with a boat)
- Switchblade (blue plane/helicopter)
- Vampire (red bike)
- Jackhammer (black jeep)
- Vampire (red bike)
- Piranha (purple trike)
- Hurricane (blue car)
- Firefly (orange racing car)

I also remember that i always wanted to buy the Boulder Hill (their base station) but my mum refused becos it cost around $100++ in the 80s. When my mum finally agreed, the item was out of stock at the MP Toys' R Us. Strangely shortly after that, I lost interest in MASK already and moved on to computer games (IBM XT), playing games like PacMan, Alley Cat, Digger ... LOL

Roly boy, I think transformer came slightly later only, shld have quite a fair bit of overlap in terms of popularity cos I was crazy over both at the same time. The Centurion was even earlier before MASK, while Starcom came after transformer.

If I m not mistaken, transformer had 2 versions. The earlier one was the US version while latter is Japanese, from which I started to lose my interest in them.

Actually she achieved mainstream international stardom in the early 70s and peaked in the early 80s.

Her most critically acclaimed album must be 淡淡幽情 released in 1983 featuring poems from the Tang and Song Dynasties. :D

Yes my fave is this song adapted from the poem 虞美人, written by the last emperor of the southern Tang Dynasty.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-ueTi-2ieE&sns=em

李煜: 虞美人
春花秋月何时了,
往事知多少。
小楼昨夜又东风,
故国不堪回首月明中。
雕栏玉砌应犹在,
只是朱颜改。
问君能有几多愁,
恰似一江春水向东流。
