View Full Version : Blood Donation
Has anyone made a blood donation?
Any negative impact to one's health?

100,000 units are needed in a year in Singapore.
http://www.hsa.gov.sg/publish/hsaportal/en/health_services/blood_donation/why_donate.html
Does that mean we need 100,000 people to donate blood every year?
If people only donate blood once in 10 years, does that mean we need
1 Million
people to donate?
Are there professional blood donors in Singapore?
Thanks,
Richard
"giving blood is entirely safe".
http://www.hsa.gov.sg/publish/hsaportal/en/health_services/blood_donation/donation_process/is_it_safe.html
This claim makes me worried now. We all know there is no such thing as "entirely safe" in modern Western Medicine. A quickly search shows:
Blood Donation Accident
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKkZUz50OnY
"This is a real incident. One of the staff from New Medical Centre. After his blood donation, he down. But he done all medical check-up, include pressure check-up also, because at the check-up time, he also in my line. I don't know his name. He is from Pakistan and he a team member of NMC and UAE"
Thanks,
Richard
I heard, you will be even more healthy and put on weight after repeatedly donations.
This is a more balanced view

I have never donated blood before.
Can donating blood make one feel younger?
I have spoken to some frequent blood donors and they say that they feel rejuvenated each time they donate.
old wives tale has it that donating blood is like getting rid of the tired and dirty blood circulating in your system. there is certain truth in that in terms of blood letting being behind some treatments principles.
new fresh blood is then formed in your body. of course you must eat well and healthy during that period of regeneration.
I donated once last time, blacked out for a while after that... :violins:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_blood_can_a_person_donate
The American standard seems to allow 500 ml for each blood donation.
Singapore standard seems to be 450 ml.
I cannot remember whether it is 100 ml or 200 ml in the old days in China.
So how much you have donated for each extraction?
Thanks,
Richard
"donating is of no proven health benefit for donors (other than for those
who have haemochromatosis)".

Sometimes blood donations can put a person at risks. Donors are usually screened for the presence of risk factors/diseases. Some of the risks faced by a blood donor are listed below -
A quick change in BP can result in hypovolemic reactions-fainting might ensue
Less than 1% suffer from bruising by the needle
Some the donors suffer from bleeding
Blood donors may occasionally react adversely to the sodium citrate used to prevent coagulation during apheresis. Sodium citrate, returned to the donor along with blood components that are not required, can bind together the calcium present in the donors blood. This may cause hypocalcemia-the symptoms of which include tingling in the lips, convulsion or even graver symptoms. This condition can be prevented by providing calcium supplements to the donor.
Manual apheresis, without the help of automated machines can lead to transfusion reactions
Usage of non-sterilized equipments and needles can increase risk to donors
I donate blood because it makes me feel good about helping others (though not purely altruistic) ... but was rejected quite a number of times due to low HP count.
I always wonder ... to be fair ... If one does not want to donate blood even if he is physically fit to do so, does that mean he does not deserve to receive blood even when he genuinely needs them?
Just confirmed with a doctor in China. The max amount for blood donation is 200 ml. Beyond that, it will take longer time for the body to recover. 450 ml is a no-no. Some people will never be able to fully recover with 450 ml blood extraction.
In China, the donor receives a Certificate. This Certificate allows any family member to receive FREE blood if they need treatments in future.
Thanks,
Richard
Check with one of my Singaporean friends. He was declined donation because during his study in France, there was mad cod disease there. Because this type of virus takes a long time to show symptom, he is considered as not suitable for blood donation.
Thanks,
Richard
mad cow or mad cod??
in sg we also have mad khaw disease...
