HDB to build 1,600 car park lots next year

It is also studying mechanised parking systems

By MINDY TAN

TO better address parking needs, the Housing Development Board (HDB) will build 1,600 car park lots next year, and will study the use of high-rise mechanised parking systems for older HDB estates.

The new lots to be constructed next year are in addition to the 3,400 lots built in the last two years; the lots cost $66 million to build in total.

In addition, HDB has been asked to study the feasibility of implementing mechanised parking systems, and evaluate the different technologies available, said National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan in his latest blog post.

According to Mr Khaw, former Member of Parliament Ang Mong Seng has strongly recommended such systems - citing lower cost, land constraints and reliability - following his trip to China where he went to study the mechanised parking system.

The problem of car park shortages is more pronounced in older HDB estates, which were built under old car park provision norms.

Estates with four-room flats had 560 car park lots planned per 1,000 flats. The equivalent norm for such precincts is now 710 car park lots per 1,000 flats.

'With the new norms, new HDB flats will come with adequate car parks. The problem is in the older HDB estates. Of the 1,800 HDB car parks island-wide, about 220 of them face some localised shortages,' he said.

To further ameliorate the supply crunch, HDB will also set aside more reserved lots for residents, remove the night parking scheme for non-residents and implement electronic pricing systems to increase turnover of short-term parking demand.
