Strait Times Front Page News: Thai teen who lost legs set to go home

Thai teenager Peneakchanasak Nitcharee, who lost both legs after falling onto MRT tracks in ANg Mo Kio, will go home tomorrow....
The family has yet to fully settle matters here. Mr Peneakchanasak engaged a lawyer last week to look into getting higher compensation from SMRT. It had offered $5,000, which he has rejected.

Visibly upset - his voice broke at one point - he said the amount was 'unacceptable'. 'This is for a person, A LITTLE GIRL - A LITTLE GIRL who had a bad accident", he said.

"From today onwards, there will be more expense, like the cost of her new legs and rehabilitation."

When contacted, SMRT said its discussion with the family are private and confidential.

It is the first TV fundraising show solely for the needy elderly.

The show featured retro Chinese music performed by artistes such as Lin Hui Ping, Lin Shu Rong, Luo Shi Feng, Wan Fang, and Chen Mei Feng.
Popular blind singer Yang Guang from China also lent his voice to the show.

Should sue if there is a breach of duty of care. Otherwise, it's kind gifts.

that girl is a foreigner, who can potentially steal Singaporeans' jobs. So good riddance to foreigners. No pity on foreigners who will steal Singaporeans' jobs.
1 indonesian boy drowned, 1 thai girl going back.
2 down, another 1.999.998 million more to go.

I am very disgusted by SMRT and the person whom made the decision to compensate 5K.

Seriously the person got bird brain? Why not chop his legs and compensate 10K? :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

But majority take MRT. and there are other stakeholders, like shareholders for examples. Do you their EPS, DPS, share price be hit by eg million dollar payout. Or expect MRT to put signs in many languages?
so you going to donate to help the girl?
I won't.
Accidents do happen to little children. It may happen to my own. Can only work to achieve financial independence for them if they cannot work for the rest of their life.

And lastly, there is moral hazard in giving out high compensation to those who lost their legs in accidents. Just like crime does not pay, accident does not pay.

The family of Thai teen Nitcharee Peneakchanasak (http://sg.search.yahoo.com/search?p=nitcharee+peneakchanasak&fr=fp-today&cs=bz) who was hit by an MRT train will receive $250,000 in donations from the Singapore Red Cross Society (http://sg.search.yahoo.com/search?p=singapore+red+cross+society&fr=fp-today&cs=bz) on Thursday.

The sum which was contributed by a group of anonymous donors is meant to support the teen's future medical expenses, which include the cost of her rehabilitation programme.

In April, Nitcharee, 15, had fallen onto the train tracks of Ang Mo Kio station and both her legs were crushed by the incoming train.

A spokesman for the Singapore Red Cross Society said that the donations did not come from fund-raising efforts, reported The Straits Times.

Instead, the society was approached on Wednesday morning by the anonymous donors.

"The amount comes from a group of donors who approached the society and asked if we could pass on the money to our Thai counterparts with whom we work very closely," she said.

The cheque will be presented to Thai Princess Maha Chakir Sirindhorn by Singapore Red Cross chairman Tee Tua Ba on Thursday afternoon, and the sum will be given directly to the girl's father.

Since arriving in Bangkok on Monday, Nitcharee has been staying at the Sirindhorn National Medical Rehabilitation Centre where she is undergoing physiotherapy.

It is understood that measurements for her prosthetic legs were taken when she arrived at the centre, and they are now being made in Germany. They cost 1 million baht ($40,000) each.

However, it is unclear whether Nitcharee's family will receive any financial help in Bangkok for her prosthetic limbs, but it is understood that the centre may be paying for them.

Meanwhile, her medical bills in Singapore amount to about $46,000 and were paid for by her father.

Earlier this week, My Paper reported that Nitcharee's father had declined SMRT's compensation offer of $5,000 and had engaged a lawyer to ask for a fairer compensation.

"I am so happy to be home. I am thankful for everyone's kindness, both here and in Singapore," said Nitcharee.

The girl also expressed her desire to be up on her prosthetic legs as soon as possible, adding that she must maintain her current body weight of 40kg in order for the "new legs" to support her.

"She has a very positive mindset," added the centre's head physiotherapist Ms Pakaorn Sai-pan. "She's doing very well and her cheerfulness makes the other patients here happy."

it is moral hazard to pay off accident victims.
accidents do not pay.

still remembered the case of foreign worker who was thrown into a drain and left to drown and die because employer cannot afford due to him being a crippled?
well, last i read, his wife left him and he was still left to die.....

remember, in thailand, parents sell their daughters into prostitution to pay off family debts. Once news of the bonanza reach north-eastern thailand, do expect more foreign children to "accidentally" fall into MRT tracks. Can get more money than selling daughters into prostitution..

and I expect this girl to be abandon to die, or suffocated in her sleep once she is back in thailand. The family will use the money for themselves and not for her.

Well, given a choice of losing legs and going into prostitution, I personally think there's still some hope with prostitution (can still exit the vice) than losing 2 legs (forever gone). Just my opinion!
