Because as you will have noticed, any recounts, disputes, recounts are done on polling day itself. Where got wait 3 months to dispute before opening ballot box again as suggested by Westman. :doh:.
For opposition to forever dispel the fear that voting is not secret, they should proposed that the ballot boxes are kept in 1 open location, perhaps a football field and monitored by all. After 1 week, no disputes come in, then they disposed. The best way to be safe is to be out in the open, not some secure high court vault where no public eyes can see.

some may argue that government cannot punish 500,000 workers. They are right. However, government don't need to. the people picked to be punished are randomised. perhaps 1 in 1000? or when you really need helps, and approached government agency for help, that's when you will be denied. government won't make it so obvious that they know your votes. They would allow most opposition voters to move up ranks, promoted in civil service, army.
Side note: Thats where the word "decimate" comes in. If a Roman army would to retreat unordered, upon regrouping, they would form a row and 1 in 10 would be killed by their fellow soldiers. That's roman army discipline for you.
Anyway, do you want to be the one to be picked for selective punishment?
Next 5 years, electioin will be in 2015-2016. That will be during recession or just right after recession. They can always repeat "PAP steered the country out of recession". or "dont change horse in the middle of river".
The opposition need to think how to counter the mantras from now.
and please get as many non-nominated MPs as possible. Don't reject it as being useless. Use it to publicize your profile. Ask more questions etc....
salary of ministers in non-issue here. People vote only for their own pockets. HDB price up some more.
And opposition better think of a way to counter that the belief that voting them will cause HDB price to comes down.

LTK should really thank LKY. The repent remark is instrumental pushing the sentiment in WP's favor. His gamble payed off. Ppl vote for him just for the sake of a loud voice. It's clear, without this GRC win, the opposition would have drowned. This is real fearmongering and it worked.

Just heard this version from relative in Aljunied this morning, tat when MM say ALJUNIED residents need to repent, actually he was directly this to his PAP team there, that if they lose, residents in Aljunied will ask them to repent...for 5 years, then come back and fight again...., 2006 GE Aljunied already send message to PAP team, better do something, if not...
They still have the votes from the HDB heartlanders but not the new residents. There are easily more than 1000 households in the new condos in the last 5 years. A lot more coming up. We will not see Potong Pasir SMC in the next election as it will subsume under Marine Parade GRC. Too dangerous to be on her own.

Feel sorry for him and his team. Just hope Benjamin Pwee will continue the good work or consolidate and from alliance with other parties to form stronger team and fight in GRCs again as potong pasir SMC will be rezoned into MP GRC.

This GE has set an unprecedented pattern. The opp power is one to be reckoned with in subsequent GEs. WP will extend their hold. After 20 years in Hougang and even getting a higher % now than 2006, they've captured Aljunied, slaying one of the more promising tiger in govt. They are eyeing their next victim. Was hoping that it was Tampines that fell. Now there is only one GRC that separates Aljunied from Tampines - Marine Parade GRC. In order to maintain a good support, WP must first capture Marine Parade. One by one like domino, the incumbent will fall.... :scared-1:

My strategy for opposition for next election is for opposition to firstly unite into a single opposition party and phase out SPP, SDP, SDA and NSP. They should work the grounds in the entire singapore and have organisations comparable to the grassroots to help the needy in singapore. They should also hold more fundraising charity events to help the needy knock on every household to address concerns. They do that consistently for the next five years, they will take 3 grcs next election. They have to best the pap grassroots to win big times
Think even private estate also fed up, anyhow last minute announce foreign workers dormitory...on fringe of Serangoon gardens...., residents read from newspapers and not consulted...

Keeping the economy humming is more important than fretting over whether votes will be lost.
Foreign Minister George Yeo gave this response yesterday when asked if the unpopular decision to house foreign workers in Serangoon Gardens would affect political support for his Aljunied GRC team.
Speaking to The Sunday Times on the sidelines of a Hari Raya grassroots dinner, Mr Yeo said: ‘The important thing is to do what is right. You cannot always be worried about votes.’
He explained that the economy needs foreign workers and Singaporeans should understand these constraints.
‘When the economy goes down and people’s lives are affected… surely that must be politically more costly to the Government,’ he said.
Plans to convert the former Serangoon Gardens Technical School at Burghley Drive into a dormitory for foreign workers made headlines last month, with residents meeting their MPs and signing a petition.
The Government has since decided to go ahead with the dormitory but said it would accommodate some of the residents’ concerns, including the construction of a new access road from the Central Expressway to Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
However, other residents living near the new access road became unhappy.
In response, the Ministry of National Development announced last week that it would work with the dormitory operator to arrange for buses to pick up and drop off workers within the dormitory’s premises.
Trees and shrubs near the access road will also be planted to shield the dormitory from surrounding houses.
Acknowledging that there are a handful of residents who are still upset, Mr Yeo pointed out that the ministry had already gone out of its way to accommodate residents.
He said: ‘There’s got to be a certain tolerance so long as their concerns are addressed…We all have our preferences about what should be in our neighbourhood and we can’t have all our wishes.
‘A decision has been taken, requests have been made, whatever could be accommodated is accommodated. I think on the whole, it’s a good compromise.’

excluding tanjong pagar which is not contested, it is true that the PAP GRCs at the more far west, east and north win between 60 to 70% while as we move towards the centre of sg, opposition wins more and PAP wins by lesser margin of 50+%. LOL.
especially east side, look at the SMC + GRC combi, joo chiat, mountbatten, Marine Parade and East Coast, all won by 50+% nia. not to forget the other areas near the centre of sg (note, not CCR but centre by geographical location), Bishan Toa Payoh, Moulmein Kallang, Potong Pasir also PAP won by 50+% and of course in between centre and east is aljunied which went to WP.

oh yeah of course. non conclusive. my stats is more based on geographical location. there are other factors like which unpopular minister is in which GRC and met with what quality of opposition.
Also, in places (both GRC + SMC) where PAP won less than 60% of the votes, other than the chiams, its all WP (6) and NSP (3). the others dun even have a chance.
i think i can say that in general, the area from moulmein-kallang to east coast grc are unhappier with PAP than they were previously. i wonder why?

if the opposition more united, they could have won more seats in parliament. Tan Jee Seng, Tony Tan, Vincent Wije are very potential candidates to run in PP, not Lina unfortunately. I heard her speak during the dialogue with Shanmugaratnam and I know that instant PP will go down. As much as I am a Chiam supporter, I really his wife is the cannot make it type. Very likely she will enter parliament as NCMP but her contribution will be very insignificant imo

It is not the 27 years, but her speeches don't move anything. A good speaker could have swayed the 200 odd vote spoilers to vote in favour of SPP, but unfortunately it didnt happen. Heard the loud cheers for Chiam See Tong at the coffeeshop after the results came out, really heart rending coz i know in the hearts of many in PP still goes to Chiam.

If they wanted PP to disappear, they should have done so long ago. Not wait 20+ years. Perhaps....we don't know....they let it continue under CST so that it still looks like our country has some semblance of "democracy" (Hougang also included in this). I think Hougang might be the one to disappear in the next election and boundaries redrawn for Aljuneid.
If Sitoh does his job well, the residents in PP will be happy to continue under PAP. Actually his job is pretty easy, with the finances and resources of the PAP backing him. Can expedite the upgrading to demonstrate how much better it is to be under PAP. Quite difficult for him to mess up in PP.

Govt got to do something to improve their image and deal with the concerns of the citizens. Or else this victory by WP will be giving Opp more impetus to improve on their performance next time round. And more good caliber ppl might step out of the woodwork to challenge them.
WP has an uphill task to prove that they are worth of being elected to Aljunied GRC and to make sure that the residents don't have to repent. PAP will be going all out to make it very obvious the difference on how they treat Potong Pasir and Aljuneid/Hougang to try and make the WP GRC/SMC repent and fulfill MM's prophecy.
I won't be surprise that towards the West, PAP wins more as the West (Jurong East, Jurong West, etc) is dominated by many new converted Citizens (especially the PRCs). What would they feel when their constituency contestants say limit intake of foreigners & PRs (which they once were)? :doh:

IF pap had drawn PP into a GRC together with another district ... PAP might still lose ...cos PP support was there
now that PAP takes control of PP ...next election they may become a GRC ...together with another PAP stronghold ..that way OPP will never be able to take back PP

During the counting process at Paya Lebar counting centre. I noticed PAP's counting agents were behaving arrogantly! Interestingly, during counting, PAP's guys like to stare at us, sort of like we've just killed their father/mothers and they are here for revenge. Very cocky. One of them even shouted "WE WILL FIGHT EVERY VOTE" when one of the ARO rejected PAP's agent claim for dismissing a PAP vote in favour to WP. Cynthia Phua came in pretty early and she looked confident in winning. :tongue3:
Midway in the counting, Chen Show Mao (you hated most :D :D ) came to recevie some update from us and also gave us some encouragement along the way..
Shortly after he left the counting station, Cynthia Phua came in again at around 10.45pm to receive update from his agents. When knowing poor results at this station, her face turned "extreme BLACK" and walk off immediately... We are having fun for see this "Black ugly and fat face"...
At around 11pm, Mao Mao came in to receive updates from us (with good news of beating PAP at this station), he thanks us for the effort. Was expecting he to go off immediately and to my surprise, he approached all counting stations officers (about 35 of them) to shake hands and thanks them for their hard works in counting the votes. Very gentlement.
After witnessing the sealing of voting boxes and ensuring everthing is ok for safe depositing. We went to Hougang for celebration! Very inspiring to me indeed...

GE: Reform Party chief will still move to West Coast

SINGAPORE: Despite their loss in the West Coast GRC, the Reform Party (RP) secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam said he will still move to the West Coast - as promised.
He currently lives off Newton Road. "I promised to move into West Coast should we win. I still intend to do this and on Monday, we will start looking for a house in Pioneer. We intend to move the party office there as soon as practicable and to start implementing as much of our five-year plan as is practicable," he said.
Mr Jeyaretnam's five-man team took 33.43 per cent of the votes in West Coast GRC, trailing behind the People's Action Party (PAP) team led by Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr Jeyaretnam said that starting today, the party plans to start work preparing for the next General Election. They will focus on West Coast GRC as well as the single wards of Radin Mas and Pioneer.
He added that the party has only been campaigning for two years, but has succeeded in putting the RP on the map.
And although RP fielded a young and inexperienced team in Ang Mo Kio GRC, they still performed "creditably" and "the experience gained will stand them in good stead in the next election".
The RP garnered 30.67 per cent of the votes in Ang Mo Kio, which was won by a team led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Mr Jeyaretnam thanked party supporters for working devotedly and tirelessly during the election campaign. - TODAY

Indeed. There are already a lot of dormitories in kaki bukit industrial area which is also under the jurisdiction of Aljunied GRC. And there are still quite a lot of space left to build more.
Eg. The area around AUTOBAY at kaki bukit ave 6 (or lane 6?)
