Mr Wong: Sources say he garnered the second highest number of votes

Sources say that this followed Amara Holdings CEO Albert Teo's decision to decline the position. He was said to have been elected as president by the new management committee last Thursday - the same day that the management committee itself had been voted in at Redas's annual general meeting.

Mr Wong is said to have garnered the second highest votes for the presidency election at that time.

Although Mr Teo was not present at last week's election, he was represented, resulting in the expectation that he would succeed Simon Cheong, who has already served the maximum two consecutive terms as president.

However, Mr Teo declined the post, and at a management committee meeting yesterday, Mr Wong was proposed, seconded and accepted as the new president. He agreed to assume the post.

Industry sources say that the organisation's top brass have found it challenging trying to persuade potential candidates to stand for election as president.

Redas announced its new management committee for the 2011/2012 term yesterday evening, including Mr Wong's appointment as president.

Lim Ee Seng, CEO of Frasers Centrepoint, is first vice-president. City Developments group general manager Chia Ngiang Hong is second vice-president. Khor Thong Meng, executive director of Allgreen Properties, is honorary secretary and Ng Chee Seng, general manager of Bukit Sembawang Estates, is honorary treasurer. CB Chng of Wing Tai Land and Liam Wee Sin of UOL Group were elected honorary assistant secretary and honorary assistant treasurer.

Mr Cheong, as immediate past president, is also on the new management committee, whose other members include Amara's Mr Teo, Philip Su, who is the executive director of Far East Organization, Trina Loh of GuocoLand, John Khoo from Habitat Properties and Thomas Teo of Ascendas Services Singapore Pte Ltd.

Chong Hock Chang of Ho Bee, Robert Garman from Hongkong Land and Tan Swee Yiow from Keppel Land are also committee members.

Margaret Goh from NTUC Choice Homes Co-operative, Kwee Yi-Lin from Pontiac Land and Kemmy Tan from YTL Singapore make up the rest of the 19-strong committee.

Mr Cheong said that with the passing of the leadership baton to Mr Wong, 'Redas will continue its role as a professional and highly regarded representative body to provide effective leadership in the advancement of the real estate and development industry in Singapore and beyond'.

Mr Wong, an engineer by training, is also in charge of developing CapitaLand's business in the Gulf Cooperation Council region. He was previously president and CEO of Sembcorp Engineers and Constructors, and CEO of Cathay Organisation Holdings.
